^^^just to illustrate it...
in 2010 I was doing the expat thing living and working in Moscow, and despite the fact that I had just returned to Moscow January 12 after about 3 weeks at home for Christmas, once the 1/4 final was in the books I hopped a plane 2 days later to come home to watch the rest of the tournament in Canada. I had to be home for it.

For next year's SK tournament should it be a non NHL Olympics, and if Canada made it to the GMG, I may or may not get out of bed to watch it. Depending on the start time, sleep just may be more important.

As the Olympic hockey tournament is an IIHF event, I don't see it being an issue. The IIHF saw fit to increase the frequency of trips to North America because there's more audience and tv money. Losing one official WJC in favor of an Olympics isn't a 'loss' imo. It's a win. It's the biggest sporting stage in the world and many of the best U20 players would be there.

Why would the IIHF do that? Get rid of an event that will be a guaranteed money maker (2018 WJC in Buffalo that will be flooded with Canadians) for an event from which it generates, to the best of my knowledge, 0 profits. Why would the federations agree to limit themselves to only junior aged players?

IIHF holds repeated u20 events in Canada because Canada loves the tournament and most of the rest of the world is meh about it.

Gary Bettman said during the All Star-weekend that it doesn´t seem likely that we will see NHL-players in the Olympics 2018.

However, as I have speculated elsewhere on HFboards, Washington Capitals owner Ted Leonsis says that he would let players go play the olympics whatever the NHL decides.
We could probably expect Ovechkin in that tournament.

I think we could expect a few more players showing up. Malkin, Tarasenko and McDavid have together with Ovechkin been about as encouraged to go.
No team will want to upset their star players, but that is also why I believe that if we see NHL-players in the olympics, it will probably only be the absolute star players.

Toews also came out a few times in favour of the Olympics during the all star festivities. The NHL and hockey culture itself are pretty conservative, so I'm expecting few to no NHLers if the league doesn't participate.

If there are no NHL players, could it maybe be a U-20 event like the World Juniors or will it just be players who aren't good enough for the NHL?

All indications are that if there is no NHL participation it will just be the best of the rest. Mostly guys who aren't good enough to excel in the NHL.

Decent team. Could beat anyone.

Question is, will be AHL players available? What about e.g. Vrána, Stránský, Krejčík? There are some good players in Extraliga as well. Vrána played very well at WSH, he proved he´s able to play there, but team roster is full (after Oshies return), team is winning, I hope he´ll get a chance in the future again (but not due to sbdys injury).

BOOM and we are here! NHL confirms it won´t let its players go for the olympics.

Kaprizov-Tarasenko-Kovy-Ovie to lead Russia to gold?

I don't really think that the US and especially Canada will use AHL players. They have plenty of much better players in the KHL and other EU leagues.

Will Canada/US go back to getting together international teams that play exhibition games all year?

I'd have to think that would be the logical solution combining young kids that aren't quite ready for the NHL (D. Strome, McLeod), AHL veterans, and overseas players.

Dustin Jeffery- David McIntyre - Brandon Kozun
Matt Ellison - Nick Spaling - Jonathan Cheechoo
Rob Kilnkhammer - Gilbert Brule - Kevin Clark
Chris Didomenico - Max Talbot - Cory Emmerton

Chris Lee - Andre Benoit
Maxim Noreau - M-A Gragnani
Mark Katic - Chay Genoway
Cam Barker

Danny Taylor
Ben Scrivens

Yay!! I'm hoping a few guys like Thornton and Doan retire and decide to play. Will be interesting to see if it effects players decisions to retire... Do the Twins retire and go to the SHL for a shot at a gold medal?

Almost all of the best AHL players are on NHL contracts anyway. :dunno:

I'd be happy if we just don't bother sending a team. It would be an embarrassment.
You are incredibly underrating the "other" canadians ouside the NHL, and overrating the other countries. NO nation would have NHL players. Sweden without NHL players isn't going to be much better than Canada, if at all. HockeyCanada could select the best from Europe - which would be a pretty good team in relation to competition imo, plus maybe a few best junior players (this year I would choose Patrick, Barzal, or Dubois and Chabot for example). I think such a team will be able to win the gold. We have never seen such a team, so it's hard to tell. But I wouldn't writte them off, absolutely not.
