Curious what the value of Olofsson would be if he had signed a market level deal (let's say 3 years, 5M per) and Buffalo then retained 50% of the deal. So, in the end it'd be a middle six scoring forward in their prime years for 2.5M per year.

Ah the old let’s sign a player and then turn around and trade them while picking up half their salary. You see it all the time.

I mean, if you want to maximize value and you have oodles of cap space you don't plan on using....

I, for the life of me, cannot understand this fanbase's obsession with trading every other player we actually develop into something for picks.

Who said anything about picks?

Imagine what you could with draft with that pick, could be anything! Even an Olofsson!

Buffalo has quite a few players internally who could fill olofsson’s production. In fact too many which is why I’m open to moving him.

You, when you posted this idea on the Sabres board.

That was simply a value I was hoping for. In practice I would want to leverage him into an improvement elsewhere.

The logic of trading talent on a team with a dearth of talent baffles me. Sure, you never say never. But Olofsson is in the prime of his career and likes Buffalo. He's 26. Let's ink him to a deal and keep all those goals. He had a nice recovery, but his price will still be off a bit because of a slow start.

If somehow, someone comes to us with a #1 goalie or a top 4 RD, we can revisit keeping him.

It would be madness to trade him for more picks.

Yeah, I don't see that happening. At all.

I could see BUF agreeing to terms on a 1 year deal with VO and then trading him at 50%, but it's not going to happen on a multi-year contract.

So VO signed for 1 year, retained at 50% is probably woth 2 second rounders, or a 2nd + B prospect.
