Oldest trade trees?

On Sportsnet's YouTube channel, there have been videos of late, usually weekly, where Steve Dangle does a trade tree that's still having ramifications today. When looking up trade trees, one knows Wayne Gretzky, which had a trade tree that went for about 30 years, and the Cam Neely trade tree which is 34 years old.

But I would ask: is there any trade tree older than the Rick Martin trade tree? That one traces back to Rick Martin for Don Edwards and two draft picks on March 10, 1981 (one became Tom Barrasso).

This is an article on a Sabres' fan site describing the tree...which will turn 40 next year and will live beyond that because a 2021 pick is involved. Rick Martin trade tree – Two in the Box

Bob Lorimer (drafted 1973 NYI) was traded to NJ Oct 1 1981 for a pick that was used to select Lafontaine, Brad Marchand is a result of that trade tree.

I constructed this for the Calgary Flames....best I could come up with so far:

June 1979: Kent Nilsson reclaimed by Atlanta from Winnipeg prior to Expansion Draft

June 1980: Kent Nilsson transferred to Calgary after Atlanta franchise relocated

June 1985: Kent Nilsson traded to Minnesota by Calgary with Calgary's 3rd round choice (Brad Turner) in 1986 Entry Draft for Minnesota's 2nd round choice (Joe Nieuwendyk) in 1985 Entry Draft and 2nd round choice (Stephane Matteau) in 1987 Entry Draft

December 1995: Joe Nieuwendyk traded to Dallas by Calgary for Corey Millen and Jarome Iginla

March 2013: Jarome Iginla traded to Pittsburgh by Calgary for Kenny Agostino, Ben Hanowski and Pittsburgh's 1st round pick (Morgan Klimchuk) in 2013 NHL Draft

November 2018: Morgan Klimchuk (played only 1 game as a Flame) traded to Toronto by Calgary for Andrew Nielsen

* Andrew Nielsen has yet to play a game, but he's on Calgary's AHL affiliate in Stockton, Calif.

Just doing a quick scan of the Toronto Maple Leafs and aside from maybe an esoteric draft pick that came from a much older trade tree it looks like most of the assets in the organization don't go much further beyond the Kadri pick in 2009. Kind of shows how poorly the organization has maintained assets and value over the years.

in 1973, the new york islanders took denis potvin first overall.

....much later that day they took bob lorimer in the 9th round

in 1981, after two cups, lorimer is traded to the rockies with someone named dave cameron for a 1983 1st round pick that turned out to be pat lafontaine

in 1991, lafontaine and a few randos are traded to buffalo for pierre turgeon, uwe krupp, benoit hogue, and dave mcllwain

that spring mcllwain is traded with ken baumgartner for dan marois and claude loiselle

a year later marois is traded for an 8th round pick that never plays

loiselle lasts slightly longer, playing in that '93 islanders cinderella run to the wales finals before retiring (so TWENTY years later, lorimer is still winning playoff rounds for al arbour, though arguably krupp, hogue, and even turgeon had more to do with it than loiselle)

in '94, krupp is traded to quebec for ron sutter and a swap of 1st round picks (isles got brett lindros, quebec got wade belak)

lindros' career ends 15 months later

sutter leaves as a free agent in '96

at the '95 trade deadline hogue is traded with a 3rd and a 5th to toronto for a first rounder that became eric fichaud

fichaud busts and later is traded for someone named mike watt

img122.jpg

also at the '95 deadline, turgeon is packaged with vladimir malakhov for kirk muller, mathieu schneider, and craig darby

darby is picked up on waivers a year later

also a year later, muller is traded in a three way with ottawa and toronto that brings bryan berard, martin straka, and ken belanger to the island

became milbury gonna milbury, straka gets waived six weeks later

berard is traded for felix potvin and a swap of 6ths

the 6th is traded for craig janney, who plays out the year and retires

potvin is traded to vancouver for dave scatchard, kevin weekes, and bill muckalt

scatchard leaves during the lockout as a UFA

weekes is packaged with a 2nd and traded to tampa for a 1st, 4th, and 7th

that 1st is raffi torres, who... we'll get to shortly

muckalt is traded to ottawa with chara and the spezza pick for alexei yashin

yashin's cap hit lasted until 2015

oh but you forget ken belanger, who is traded in '98 for ted donato

donato is traded in '99 for a 4th round pick

that 4th round pick is traded immediately packaged to sweeten a reichel for isbister and a swap of 3rds trade (the islanders' pick never played)

isbister and raffi torres are traded to edmonton for janne niiinimaa and a 2nd that didn't amount to anything

on the other side of the lockout niinimaa was traded to dallas for john erskine a 2nd that became jesse joensuu

erskine left as a free agent that summer

joensuu kicked around between the island and bridgeport until 2013, when he signed the the oilers—we are now FORTY years after lorimer was drafted

and now we finally get to mathieu schneider...

schneider goes to toronto in the wendel clark backsies, netting the 1st that became luongo, kenny jonsson, darby hendrickson, and sean haggerty

haggerty kicks around the system for a few years before getting waived

hendrickson is traded back to toronto a few months later for a 5th that they used to take the great jiri dopita

dopita is later traded to florida for another 5th that becomes nothing

kenny jonsson stays in new york for nine years and eventually becomes captain before going back to sweden during the lockout and never coming back

in 2001 milbury gets drunk and trades luongo and olli jokinen to florida for oleg kvasha and mark parrish

kvasha plays five years for the islanders before getting traded at the 2006 deadline to phoenix for a 3rd

at the draft, boston trades a 4th and a 5th for that kvasha 3rd to move up to take brad marchand; neither islanders pick played

mark parrish is also traded at the 2006 deadline, with brent sopel to LA for jeff tambellini and denis grebeshkov

tambo kicks around for a while and beats his dad's family islanders games played record before eventually leaving as a UFA

greb leaves for the KHL at the end of the year and they trade his rights to edmonton for marc-andre bergeron and a 2008 3rd

garth snow adds somebody named allan rourke to that 3rd to trade up to draft travis hamonic in the 2nd

MAB is traded to get that 2008 3rd back; they take kirill petrov, who finally in 2016 came over for a few games before immediately going back to the KHL

in 2017, FORTY-FOUR years after lorimer was drafted, hamonic is traded for a 1st and two 2nds

those picks became ruslan iskhakov, samuel bolduc, and current rookie noah dobson; all three were born in the year 2000

i mean what a trade. two hall of famers in pat lafontaine and roberto luongo. arguably the three of the most infamous post-dynasty islanders ever, pierre turgeon, brett lindros, and alexei yashin. kirk muller, mathieu schneider, bryan berard, marty straka, felix potvin, craig janney, and longtime islanders workhorses kenny jonsson, dave scatchard, and travis hamonic. collatorals include chara, spezza, wendel clark, olli jokinen, wade redden, and marchand.

and you still have noah dobson in the lineup as a freakin' rookie FORTY-SEVEN years later.

For the Leafs, I think there was a good one that started with damphousse. Fuhr to Jonsson to Schneider to McCabe to Van Ryn. That went all the way to about 25 years after drafting Damphousse. And those are only the major parts. There may have been a couple minor parts along the way that led to other trees.

I'd definitely call Andreychuk the primary "major part" of the Fuhr deal, though the first rounder has enough value to not consider a throw in.
All that came of Andreychuk down the road was Marek Posmyk, who went to Tampa in the Tucker deal, but Posmyk was the very definition of a throw in.

George Maguire has to be one of the stupidest GM's in NHL history, he had until April 1, 1981 to cancel the deal if Martin wasn't ready, instead they get 5 games worth of play for 1st and 3rd rounders. Martin's knees were done for at that point.

Brendan Shanahan brought Blues Jordan Binnington

Let's start with the Summer of '91 (28 years ago) and the Blues have signed Brendan Shanahan to an Offer Sheet.

Long story short, they have to give up Scott Stevens to New Jersey. (Most here probably know that whole story)

ANYWAY. July of 1995, Shanahan is traded to Hartford for Chris Pronger.

Fast forward ten years, and after the lockout and with the Salary Cap being introduced, ownership decides to trade Pronger to Edmonton for Eric Brewer, Jeff Woywitka, and Doug Lynch.

Woywitka would leave as a free agent, and Lynch would never play for the Blues.

Fast forward to Feb 18, 2011 and Eric Brewer is traded to Tampa Bay for Brock Beukeboom and Tampa's 2011 3rd round pick.

Beukeboom would never dress for the Blues.

That third round pick would be used on none other than Jordan Binnington.

Blues win Cup!!!!!

That’s awesome!

Speaking of the Blues, here’s a tree which, though no longer active, is historically significant because (A) it fully overlapped with the Blues’ historic run of 25 straight playoffs, and (B) it involved a trade with the Kansas City Scouts!

Oct 1972
Larry Giroux signs as free agent

Oct 1974
Larry Giroux traded to Kansas City Scouts for Chris Evans and 4th round pick in 1976 Draft (Blues select Mike Liut)

Feb 1985
Mike Liut traded to Hartford with Jorgen Pettersson for Greg Millen and Mark Johnson

Dec 1989
Greg Millen traded to Quebec with Tony Hrkac for Jeff Brown

Mar 1994
Jeff Brown traded to Vancouver with Bret Hedican and Nathan LaFayette for Craig Janney

Mar 1995
Craig Janney traded to San Jose with cash for Jeff Norton and 3rd round pick in 1997 Draft

May 1997
3rd round pick in 1997 Draft traded to Colorado with conditional 3rd round pick in 2000 Draft for Brent Johnson

Mar 2004
Brent Johnson traded to Phoenix for Mike Sillinger

Jan 2006
Mike Sillinger traded to Nashville for Timofei Shishkanov

Aug 2006
Timofei Shishkanov signs with KHL in Russia

I kind of wish this tree were still alive, because it goes to the very roots of the Scouts/Rockies/Devils' franchise, and lasted 36 years.

July 1976Wilf Paiement transferred to Colorado after Kansas City relocates
December 1979Wilf Paiement traded by Colorado to Toronto, with Pat Hickey, for Lanny McDonald and Joel Quenneville
November 1981Lanny McDonald traded by Colorado to Calgary, with Colorado's 4th round choice in the 1983 Entry Draft, for Bob MacMillan and Don Lever
June 1982Bob MacMillan transferred to New Jersey after Colorado relocates
June 1984Bob MacMillan traded by New Jersey to Chicago, with New Jersey's 5th round choice in the 1985 Entry Draft, for Don Dietrich, Rich Preston and Chicago's 2nd round choice (Eric Weinrich) in the 1985 Entry Draft
June 1985Eric Weinrich selected by New Jersey with Chicago's 2nd round choicein the 1985 Entry Draft

I like how Jay Pandolfo singlehandedly represented that trade tree for 17 years. So NJ Devils.

Been through some Seals-Barons-North Stars stuff and by accident found this one. It isn´t really my favourite because it drags a bit with rather insignificant part of trades. But neverheless it goes 25 years from 1967 expansion. Sadly no old newspaper telsl what the last future considerations became. Likely cash, but in theory it could have gone further by some way.

-1967 June 16. California Seals selects Alain Caron (101.) and Wally Boyer (47.) in Expansion draft amongst others

-1968 May 21. Oakland Seals trade Alain Caron, Wally Boyer, 1968 1. round pick (becomes 3-Jim Pritchard), 1970 1.round pick (becomes 5-Ray Martyniuk) and future consideration (becomes Lyle Bradley) to Montreal Canadiens for Norm Ferguson, Stan Fuller and future considerations

-1968 Jun 16. Future considerations that Seals get becomes Francois Lacombe and Michel Jacques

-1970 May 22. California Golden Seals trade 1971 1.round pick (becomes 1-Guy Lafleur) and Francois Lacombe+cash to Montreal Canadiens for 1970 1.round pick (becomes 10-Chris Oddleifson) and Ernie Hicke

-1971 Nov 17. California Golden Seals trade Chris Oddleifson and Rich Leduc to Boston Bruins for Ivan Boldriev

-1974 May 23. California Golden Seals trade Ivan Boldriev to Chicago Blackhawks for Len Frig and Mike Christie

-1976 Jul 15. Len Frig contract moves to Cleveland Barons in the franchise relocation

-1977 Aug 17. Cleveland Barons trade Len Frig to St. Louis Blues for rights to Mike Eaves

-1978 May 25. Cleveland Barons signs Mike Eaves

-1978 Jun 15. Mike Eaves contract moves to Minnesota North Stars on the merger

-1983 Jun 8. Minnesota North Stars trade Mike Eaves and Keith Hanson to Calgary Flames for Steve Christoff and 1983 2nd round pick (becomes 38-Frantisek Musil)

-1990 Oct 26. Minnesota North Stars trade Frantisek Musil to Calgary Flames for Brian Glynn

-1992 Jan 21. Minnesota North Stars trade Brian Glynn to Edmonton Oilers for David Shaw

-1992 Sep 2. Minnesota North Stars trade David Shaw to Boston Bruins for future considerations
