The future
This topic came up in the GDT for the carolina game and decided that it may be thread worthy (mods can delete/move if it's not):

I think with the team being so bad for 11 years, a lot of perceived rivalries have truly cooled off. Maple Leafs and Bruins may always remain high on the list even with losing seasons, but it got me thinking about past rivalries and specifically which opponent players fueled those rivalries.

@Sabresfansince1980 shared a clip from the 05-06 playoff series against OTT and it reminded me of just how much i hated Chris Neil and that team. Do any of you have any players that you just hate because of an old rivalry or some stupid shit they did in a game?

I will share that Johnny Boychuck will always be on my list for slashing and breaking Vanek's ankle in 2010. Maybe Scotty Gomez for slew footing the shit out of Miller behind the net and then playing dumb.

I would love to hear what you all think.

Milan Lucic, Chris Neil, Andre (Moose) Dupont, Clark Gilles (yeah, he became a Sabre), Wayne Cashman.

I generally hate and despise the Bruins (Probably long term, the best run organization in the NHL unfortunately), the Flyers and the Islanders.

Oh, I need to add Kucherov for how he took out Sobatka in Sweden.

Then again, maybe I should congratulate him instead?

Did you still hate Gilles when he became a sabre? Or did you "look the other way?"

Of all the teams I've hated over the years, Boston takes the cake. From Ken Linesman and Cam Neely, to Boychuk, to Marchand now...I've never stopped hating that team and their jackass announcer.
Jack Edwards is just the worst. A true caricature of homerism

Right now Tampa's the highest on my shit-list. Not only are they dirty as hell but they are never penalized in game for it.

Cernak elbowing Dahlin in the head (no penalty on the play, 2 game suspension),
Cernak boarding Eichel (No penalty IIRC)
Kucherov low-bridging Sobotka (no penalty)
Stamkos targeting Cozens head (no penalty)

Every game they do some sneaky shit like that and whine the entire time. Hate that team.

Boston is permanently on my list because of everything mentioned above, but mostly Lucic on Miller and Boychuk on Vanek.

Probably Neil and Sens for me. They're the ones from when I started following the team in the early 2000s.

Since then Marchand, Lucic, Avery... Usual suspects. Hated Tucker on the Leafs for some reason.

Ottawa was my favorite to hate in the early 2000s…but that hate is gone.
Same.

I just hate every iteration of the leafs since their inception.

You all must have loved Boychuk as a Sabre then

Nah, we are just using him as a tool, kinda like how he was as a player :sarcasm:

Bruins, Islanders, and Nordiques in the 80's.
Flyers and Pens in 90's.
Senators, Flyers, and Leafs in the 00's.
Leafs now and forever but screw the Flyers too and now Vegas.

Off the top of my head:

Flyers - the first Cup and generally the whole '70's Broad Street Bullies bullshit that then rolled into Keenan's years, then the Lindros years as a bunch of posers. This game - Philadelphia Flyers vs. Buffalo Sabres Box Score: April 21, 2001 | Hockey-Reference.com - remains one of my favorite moments. Their fans travel poorly as well.

Bruins - the '70's and into the '80's with the Brad Park OT goal being a dagger. Then losses in the Adams Division playoffs repeatedly until May Day. Since then, Marchand.

Dale Hunter. Great guy off the ice, terrible human on it. Sticking Hajt in the eye when he was supposed to go to the All Star game for the first and likely only time

The Islanders - Smith butt-ending Ruff in the eye and then the Nystrom double OT playoff loss in the Semi-Finals prior to the Isles winning their first Cup. That was the end of the first window of Sabre hockey being good IMO.

The Habs: All the luck in '93 but mostly just the fans. Coming into the rink and having more than one person say terrible things post 9/11, multiple fights in the early 90's playoff series, just terrible behavior.

The Leafs - Also poor fan behavior but Palmateer kicking Martin was the beginning of the end for Rico's career as a hockey player. So yeah, f*** Mike Palmateer in particular.

The Penguins - The original tank to get Mario, Leroux giving Pat a concussion, then the Moose team that was the end of Hasek's run, then the pre-Sid tank to get in position to get Sid, then the lottery "luck" to save the team by winning the Sid lottery.

The Rangers - sitting in the nosebleeds with UB Law (which also pertains to the Isles) has always sucked.

Tampa's recent dirt-bag behavior was already covered.

I am sure I can think of some more if I put my mind to it.

The Sabres vs the Flyers in the 90's was stuff of legend. I think I hated everyone on those Flyers teams. I DESPISED Lindros, but as I've gotten older I've gained an appreciation of how unique and great a player he was.

I still remember Matt Barnaby trolling the shit out of Flyers fans. My god they hated him so much. And Matt pounding the crap out of Garth Snow is a favorite memory of mine. I still hate Garth to this today. Him and those stupidly oversized shoulder pads.

I hated Emery a lot too in his playing days. Wish it would have turned out different for him though.

Historically:

00s Senators (Chris Neil, Bryan Smolinski, Dany Heatley, Zdeno Chara, Ray Emery)
10s Bruins (Milan Lucic, Brad Marchand, Johnny Boychuk)
2010-2012 Flyers (Mike Richards, Dan Carcillo)

Present

Bruins (Brad Marchand)
Lightning (Cernak)
Rangers (mostly the entitled Eichel demander fans)
Panthers *new* (Tkachuk)

In the NFL, I love 2 teams (BUF,SF) like a bunch others, and only hate a hand full.

In the NHL, I love 1 team, like one team's jerseys (CHI), and despise 30 teams.

Boston and Toronto will always be hated. Idc who they employ. Marus Foligno, Tuch and Golotov could buy either franchise and run it and I'd still hate them.

I haven’t been a fan as long as some of the real vets here but I’ve been a dedicated hater as long as I have

Give me a team I’ll give you a bum

There was a game back in the early 80s against the Red Wings in Detroit...If I remember correctly we were leading...At one point they decided to run our goalie, Sauve, and an all out brawl ensued....We ended up going on to lose that game...I was furious at Detriot and loathed them a great deal

There was a game where Probert repeatedly ran Barrasso. Kevin Maguire decided in the third period to even things up and ran Stefon with the game well decided.

There is video of it with the Wings call, which of course does not go into the detail of the reason why being the psycho, drunken coke addict running Barrasso earlier or that he then beats up Yzerman and Gallant before being repeatedly sucker punched by Probert on the bottom of the pile. Also the game where Phil Housley was officially dead to me after he did nothing to help in the scrum and cowered from Coke Lord to let Barrasso get punched.

Jumbo almost ending Perron’s career. Fast forward to Perron hoisting the Cup and Jumbo never doing that was proper revenge.

Jumbo leaving the B’s right before they won the Cup with Tim Thomas and Perron hoisting the Cup on that same ice will always be both ironic and foretelling for me.
