Old Arena Images & Beginnings

I'm doing a project for a digital media class I'm taking and I'm making it about hockey. I was considering including some images of old arenas, preferably in black and white. I've seen a picture somewhere on here of an arena that looked almost kind of square in how the seats were set up if that makes any sense (for some reason I think it was Maple Leaf Gardens). An example of the type of photo I'm looking for is the picture behind the layout on www.theahl.com.

Please help me out any post any images you know of, they don't have to be of an nhl arena, it can be any type of arena or even a cool old hockey barn.

Duquesne Gardens in Pittsburgh

The ice surface was 50 feet longer than the standard NHL rink.

Pittsburgh's Schenley Casino - 1895-96. The precursor to Duquesne Gardens and home of Pittsburgh's first hockey game in 1895.

Mellon Arena now can be counted amongst those ranks...

Today's venues have nothing on the civic cathedrals of the past.

Thanks guys. I e-mailed the ahl's website design company and someone told me that the arena in theahl.com opening page is Le Colisee in Quebec City.

I also found this, which I'm not going to use, but it is cool looking. It's a game at the Spokane Coliseum from Dec. 1, 1954.

edit: BigMclargehuge I really like that photo of the Igloo, the only thing that is holding me back from using it is that it is the igloo .

Also check out the first 3 images in this slide show of a 1928 Olympics hockey game, it's outdoors and there is a mountain in the background. I would post the image but it won't let me capture the location from the website.

This thread reminds me of another thread long ago where a forum member and his friend (i think) snuck into a closed-down hockey arena of a NHL team and took tons of eerie and amazing photos of it!

Situated at the corner of Denman and Georgia Streets in Vancouver, sitting on the shore of Coal Harbour, the Denman Arena was once the largest in the world. Built in 1911 by Frank and Lester Patrick at a cost of $300,000 it was the main venue for their newly formed Pacific Coast Hockey Association. Until the Montreal Forum was built in 1926, it was the largest artificial ice arena in the world seating 10,500.

Constructed of wood and brick, the large brick facing led Vancouverites to refer to it as The Pile. The Patrick brothers simultaneously built the 3,500 seat Patrick Arena in Victoria to help house their three team league which also included New Westminster. They would proceed to raid the established National Hockey Association of much of it’s top talent to stock their teams.

The Pile would host the Vancouver Millionaires Stanley Cup championship in March, 1915, boxing matches featuring Max Baer and “Cinderella Man†James Braddock, movie star Rudolph Valentino as well as bicycle races and tennis matches. The Patricks, being innovators of the game of hockey would introduce many of the games’ great changes. It was the arena that had the first blueline in hockey history, the first goal crease and where forward passing was first tested.

It was mere hours after a full house had attended a boxing match on Aug 20, 1936 that the Denman Arena would be reduced to ashes. The fire may have started in a nearby coal shed, and would cause $600,000 in damage but thankfully no deaths. Today, there are a couple of small markers at the former site of The Pile, now a manicured waterfront park dotted with public art.
