This is a consensus ranking of three of the more active posters in the draft thread who actively scout the players available for the draft(PKSpecialist, HeavyMcHitter97, ZaddyZads).

This is a preliminary ranking, and we will be creating a final ranking following the Memorial Cup at which time there will be a little more content added. Also, these are player rankings, not mock drafts.

We are collectively creating this thread to be a draft prospect discussion only. We are aware that many people here would like to deal the picks for immediate help. Take that discussion to the trade thread or the draft lottery thread. This thread is for discussing prospects and their skillset and rankings.

Also, if you would like your list added to the consensus for the final ranking, PM myself, ZaddyZads or HeavyMcHitter97. For the final rankings, we will likely be going a little deeper with the rankings, and adding in comments for each player.

Here is the list. In brackets, is the high and low ranking for each player.

1. C - Austin Matthews – ZSC Lions Unanimous
2. LW – Patrik Laine – Tappara Unanimous
3. RW – Jesse Puljujarvi – Karpat (3,4)

58. D – Ryan Lindgren – US NTDP (49,NR)
59. D – Chad Krys – US NTDP (52,59)
60(tie). D – Logan Stanley – Windsor Spitfires (49,NR)
60(tie). LW – Simon Stransky – Prince Albert Raiders (49, NR)

I found a few anomalies that we will shore up in the final rankings. One being that Andrew Peeke was ranked in the top 60 by all three of us, yet he did not crack the top 60 consensus board while several players were ranked by just one of us and found their way onto the top 60 consensus board.

Interesting that you have Cychrun ranked around 4, I had kind of got the impression that he had dropped off a bit into the 8-10 range. I haven't really seen him play personally, so I'm unfamiliar with how he plays, but it was just a feeling I got listening to some interviews with scouts and analysts over the last few months.

I personally have Chychrun at number 3. He has been in my top 3 all year. Following the WJC, I was wavering on moving him down my list, but the truth is, even though Puljujarvi and Laine turned up their game, so did Chychrun.

People pounce every time that Chychrun turns the puck over or has a defensive gaffe, and call him a Bogosian or whatever, but the truth is, he is young and makes mistakes. Drew Doughty makes a lot of mistakes too, so does Duncan Keith. Number 1 defensemen are not perfect. What makes them special is that despite their inevitable errors, they have the skating and compete to make up for them.

It's pretty fun to get a couple of lists together like this. Some guys we vary wildly on whereas some guys we have pretty much exactly in the same spot. That's pretty cool.

If the draft went like this the Oilers would come out with Chychrun and Bastian. Not a bad haul. I could definitely picture Bastian on McDavids wing.

No disrespect intended here, so I hope you don't take this the wrong way. But do we really need three threads dedicated to discussing prospects for the upcoming draft? There's already the poll for who to pick at #4. And then there is the actual draft discussion thread which has been going for months. All are essentially dedicated to the draft eligible players. So many threads addressing the same topic just makes it all difficult to follow. Instead of being abe to read one thread and follow the discussions there, it's spread out across three.

I want to read what everyone has to say, but three different discussions happening at once makes that difficult.

I see what you did there. Put your name first so you are more important :sarcasm::laugh:

Good list though.

What is the scoop on Chychrun? I live on the east coast (NS) so we don't know much. I envision the pick being traded but if it don't, what are we getting?

Really good skating two-way defender. Footwork is great. Physical, with a great shot. The only X he doesn't cross off is the flashy player. He won't wow you with incredible moves, but he gets the puck to where it needs to go. He is very good defensively, and puts up solid offensive numbers.

The thing that sets him apart from the other defenders in my mind is his demeanour. He has that 'it' factor. He is a leader, a heart and soul kind of guy.

I think it's useful to separate the discussion about prospects from the talk about trading the pick(s). I'm very interested in hearing what people that watch the players play think of them, but having to scroll through pages with repetitive arguments about trading the pick(s) makes it more difficult.

That would be fantastic if Alex Debrincat fell to 32, one of those guys who once again is under rated because of size.

Thanks for putting this together! I like where the dmen have ended up ranked. Some of the talk of Juolevi, Fabbro or even Bean ahead of Chyrchun seemed really odd to me.

I will be attending the Western Cup in Estevan this afternoon to watch University of Nebraska-Omaha commit Dean Stewart play for the Portage Terriers.

Stewart is a 6'2, 178lb right hand defender. He struggled to find his offensive game in the regular season, but has put up a PPG in the playoffs. Would expect him to have a shot at a late round pick in this years draft, but as always, it is an uphill battle for players from the MJHL and SJHL to get drafted.

Edit: Was disappointed in Stewart in my viewing today. It wasn't that he had a bad game necessarily, although he did make some defensive gaffes, but to be honest, he just doesn't stand out. He moves the puck ok, and he skates ok, but coming from the MJHL, he has a huge hill to climb to be a draft pick, however late. Much better options out there in my mind.
