I've got no time for Gaudette, Malgin, etc. Going to be keying in on Robertson, Holmberg, and Anderson as the most likely internal options to lock down a spot. With Engvall out, Holmberg has a massive opportunity and he brings a similar 2-way game. Easily the most versatile guy of the three. I think people will like him quickly.

Would like to see Robertson/Holmberg experimented in a rotation on 2/3 LW until Engvall is healthy (or Holmberg/Jarnkrok at 3C).

Bunting - Matthews - Marner
Robertson - Tavares - Nylander
Holmberg - Kerfoot - Jarnkrok
ZAR - Kampf - Aube Kubel

[Anderson]
I've got time for any guy that earns the spot

If Gaudette is the next Bunting, fantastic
If Malgin is in Swiss form, excellent
If Robertson plays like the first rounder he wasn't, amazing

Wow, Marner gained 9 pounds in the off season? That’s amazing, can’t wait to see how that translates.

Gaudette, Robertson Malgin are all going to get a good look for that 2nd line spot. They know what Kerfoot can bring so he’s always a fall back, and Engvall might get a look in the last couple of preseason games if someone hadn’t grabbed the ring by then.

My dark horse is Steeves, although he is waiver exempt, if he continues his strong play and gets a chance with Tavares and Nylander.

Nylander was asked who has looked good so far and he mentions Malgin so there is that.

But this is why they play the games in preseason, you only hope at least 2 make it a hard decision. Worst case is nobody impressed and your defaulted to Kerfoot.

I would think initially anyone that is waiver exempt has very little chance to make it out of camp.

'Steeves, although he is waiver exempt'

This may be an advantage for Steeves. He can take the LTIR replacement spot of anyone on it and then when they return he can (if needed/warranted) go down to the Marlies no chance or getting claimed.

Still, he has to be much better than non-waiver exempt individuals to grab a lineup spot. There are non-waiver exempt players I suspect management want to give a shot like Anderson, Malgin, Gaudette ahead of Steeves.

Not what I said.

Pointing out his status was a potential help to him having a opportunity, even if short lived.

The only issue is that you would still have to waive another player prior to the season opener to keep Steeves.

So really it's not much of an advantage IMO.

Why wave a player for Steeves? I don't follow. A player on LTIR makes room.

LTIR has nothing to do with anything.

Play it out.....

If you have say Malgin, Gaudette, and Steeves battling for the last roster position (LTIR or not), what do you have to do to keep Steeves up? You'd have to waive both Malgin and Gaudette to keep Steeves.

So there is no benefit at all. If you keep Gaudette, you waive Malgin and send Steeves down. Then you have to waive Gaudette when LTIR comes off.

The only thing that changes is the timing of it. There's no benefit.

Adam Gaudette, as a 21-year-old junior, led the entire NCAA with 60 points (30 goals, 30 assists) in 38 games that season. He was named the Hobey Baker Award winner as the NCAA’s best player in 2017-18.

That is the player the Leafs are trying to re-discover,

However Zach Aston-Reese. was Adam Gaudette linemate at Northeastern University for two NCAA seasons. Aston-Reese was the highest scorer on the team for the 2016-17 season with 31 goals and 32 assists (for 63 points) in 38 games. Gaudette was the third-highest scorer that season with 26 goals and 26 assists (for 52 points) in 37 games.

I wouldn't be surprised if the original test does not work that the Leafs go back to ZAR and Gaudette duo to see if they can rekindle that spark and chemistry of the past.
Interesting, I did not know he was a Hobey winner.

Coming clean. I am forever scarred and I still get Vesey flashbacks when I hear Hobey.

honestly I don't see them caring about waiver status so much. they've got so many borderline similar options for that last slot that most of them will have to be waived and enough will get through.

they'll bring the guy they think is most likely to produce right away I think.

AND when in injured player comes back you have to wave whomever you kept. Exposing them at a worst time than at the beginning when lots of half decent players are sent down.

So there can be a benefit.

It's all in how you look at it.

Agreed to an extent, but his waiver status doesn't provide any advantage.

Fair point, but the Leafs still lost 2 goalies that way.
