Go with 11 forwards.
3 forward lines and 2 specialists.
11-7 can be pulled out in certain situations, but it's not great as a consistent strategy. You have to constantly mix and match, which just leads to mistakes, or you have "specialists" sitting for extended periods. We have no reason to do these abnormal configurations that put our best players in sub-optimal situations and put unnecessary pressure on lesser players. Not sure why people are in a rush to break up the best line in hockey.

Pretty sure Kerfoot-Kampf-Kase was the 3rd line from the start of camp last year.

Actually no I'm wrong....Matthews was injured so Kerf was centering Willy and Bunting in the preseason. But Kampf-Kase were definitely a thing from the start but it was Engvall with them until Auston came back.

TOI/g

You have forwards on the Leafs playing 20 minutes a night and 7 minutes a night.

That is so archaic.

So are you telling me the players who play less than 10 minutes a night are physically unable to play 15?

Not only that, but you should get better quality ice time with better players.

How many players complain about too much ice time?

Maybe it is time to be creative.

Pay fewer players who are better than more players who are worse.

Our 4th line is closer to 10 minutes, not 7 minutes. There's nothing "archaic" about our time allocation.
Players playing 10 minutes a night are physically capable of playing 15 minutes, but there's no reason to play our worse players more, our best players less, and put everybody in sub-optimal situations and configurations.

Yes, because players 10, 11, 12 are worse players than players 1-9.
They're not good enough because better players get paid more.
You pay minimum you get minimum talent. (Other than hometown discount - Giordano types)

Turn two scrubs into a top 9 forward.

I don't know about Gaudette being that guy but I'm all for some young guys finally be giving an opportunity.

I feel like sometimes Leafs look for a trade to fill a gap but I think there is some interesting prospects or younger ahl/nhl tweeners that need a few games to see what they can do.

They're not sexy names but Malgin, Robertson, Steeves, Gaudette... even Douglas. They should be guys that are gunning to carve out a name for themselves in the lineup.

There's a few other younger guys but they're more likely a year or two off.

I dont necessarily see him having a season like Bunting putting up 60 pts but I could definitely see him being this year's bargain bin splash. He had a great year with Vancouver a few years ago putting up 33 pts in 59 games and he was a big time scorer in college.

He ran into some health issue with his stomach and lost a lot of weight. Let's hope that's all past him and he can have a big bounce back.

I think at full health, this would be an ideal lineup. 3rd line that's still defensively aware but can put the puck in the net as well...Gaudette, Robertson, Anderson can all fight for that spot imo. A big body (Engvall) to play with higher skilled players and use his frame/speed for puck retrieval. An extremely defensively sound 4th line that could match against almost anyone and shut them down/give them fits with their checking style of play. And the 1st line, we all know what they can do.

Ice time not line number is key.

You only go with 7 dmen if you have a D full of holes and one-dimensional dmen that can only play very specific situations.

The Leafs' D is stacked and deep with good 2-way dmen. Doesn't make sense to play 7 of them,

Not really sure what you're trying to say. We're not at a shortage of top-9 players. Even if we turned two 10-12 players into another top-9 player, that wouldn't change the fact that there's no reason to play our worse players more, our best players less, and put everybody in sub-optimal situations and configurations.

Robertson should get at minimum 10-15 games in a top 6 scoring role

No value I developing the guy at the AHL level

If the organization is confident about him give him the look at LW2. Leafs showed first 10 games don't matter last year as they came out poor then dominated the rest of the way

Use those games as a period to get a potential huge future piece NHL familiar and help his confidence.

Additionally I think we move hirvonen + 1st at the deadline for Patty Kane @75% to go all in

A high price but not crippling and we get to add a still superstar to a team with about 3 of them (34, 16 and maybe 44)

I like it. I think Engvall in particular could both bring what that line needs possession wise and pop a bit offensively with those linemates.

Tampa Bay and other teams have now moved to 11 and 7 exactly for this very reason Cap management and when you pay your stars there isn't enough $$ to build a solid bottom 6.

You build a solid top 9 and then have a few specialty players on your 4th line, and you often double shift your star players tossing them out to give them extra TOI so you 12th forward is actually one of your top 4 or so double dipping ice time wise.

Carrying 12 forwards and spare one is also reduced as your spare is also your 12th forward.

You can't expect players making league minimum to carry the same weight nor making any real impact and thus you only need a 4th line with minimal ice time if you have 3 top 9 players playing 16-18 minutes ES time per game & topped up with PP time.

Bunting --- Matthews ---- XXXX
XXXX ------ Tavares ------ XXXX
XXXX ----- Nylander ----- Marner

Divide Robertson, Jarnkrok, Kerfoot etc to fill in the blanks

If Jankrok is still defensively responsible he might be a good fit with the second line. Although he lacks size and likely the speed I believe he handles the puck better than Engvall.

Nylander doesn't have the defensive IQ enough to be a center that ship has sailed IMO. He is what he is, a skilled winger. You have to treat him as if he were Phil Kessel (although Kessel has proved he turns it up in the playoffs and is willing to take a hit, regular season is another story).

whats the deal with formenton?

Douglas is going to have his hands full in that group 2 game. Almost guaranteed to see him fight either Kastelic/Sabourin/Boucher.

Should have split up Simmonds/Clifford.

Still negotiating a contract according to PD, last touched base a couple days ago, he said. Think agent is Gross he said.

Could you post the leafs lineup, thanks.

Put Jarnkrok on the line and the better FO player takes the draw and you could flip Nylander and Jarnkrok ..
