To all the Doubting Thomases and Worry Warts of the world. Matthews made a mic dropping quote this morning:

"I love playing here, I consider it my home".

You can rest for the rest of the year and the end of his 2nd contract.

But honestly...c'mon...was it any surprise to you?
I take that like I take all quotes like that by anyone. The speaker lkiely believes in what they are saying at the time. Whether that is still going to be case 10 min or 10 months after the statement was made remains to be seen. So, I put no value on statements like that one way or another.

Shouldn’t the goal and hope be not to be in the same situation? Hardly cause for celebration.

At least people are finally admitting that it’s a gamble as many have stated all summer. Wonder what took them so long?
So which of Hellebyuck, sorokin, saros, shesterkin, Vasi, markstrom, demko, maybe oettinger would you have acquired considering none were moved and none were available? That’s the list of guys who aren’t a question mark and aren’t a dice roll of some magnitude, even within that group you can isolate markstrom demko sorokin and oettinger and say “do it again” before really calling them sure bets. Helle was bad last year.
Would giving a guy with one season of being a 1A at 30 years 5x5 not of been a dice roll? One that has the ability to directly impact the future of the team and their ability to retain key players.
I don’t think anyone would suggest that goaltending going into the year would be anything more than a gamble, but that’s more a testament to the quality of the position today than it is about management per say.

I wouldn't be concerned at all with a Canes or Bruins tandem. For Canes starter was out for the entire playoffs and they almost hit the ECF. Raanta is solid.

Florida, Minny, and STL know what they have. Sufficient to hit playoffs and it could work. Minny is borderline.

I dont think LA has cup aspirations, they're working through the process. Success is a bonus.
Canes starter has a long history of pulling the chute and not being able to go when his team needs him to under suspicious and often unidentifiable “injuries”.
He did it in Anaheim, we lived it in Toronto and he pulled the same nonsense this past season.
Does Florida really know what they have? I know they have a $10m goalie they couldn’t give away at 50% retained this off season and a young guy who hasn’t proven it yet.
St. Louis was so confident in Binner they had Husso carrying the team down the stretch and in some of the post season.
Do we not have the same out look for the position? We know it’ll get us in the playoffs and we’ll see how they play once there?

This is what people don't get. The Leafs literally had the worst goaltending in the league after Jan 1st, and still put up 115 points.

The playoffs were really no different (sub .900) as the rest of the 2022 part of the calendar.
Jack Campbell won 15 of his first 20 games in 2021, and he also finished the last Month April with a 7-0-1 record in 8 games earning 15 of a possible 16 points with a .915 sv%

Agreed, but the Arizona thing is certainly put to rest.

Putting vezina caliber Freddy gossip aside, the Canes have Raanta who is one of the better goalies in the league with a decade long track record. Expect the duo to win the Jennings trophy again next year and have no goalie issues going deep in the playoffs again.

Binner has had a solid career. He slipped last year but put it back together. Griess is a proven back up and both goalies are playoff stars. Expect them to be available/sufficient through the regular season and then dangerous in the post season.

Cats have cap problems and Bobs ain't worth $10M but he was good last year and Spencer is a better version of Sammy. Expect them to be healthy and at least average next year with upside.

Our situation is different because we can expect our starter not to be available as he hasn't been the last three years, and our back up hasn't proven he is NHL caliber yet so we don't know what we have there. There is upside but it's a straight up gamble.

I don't know what your definition of NHL caliber is but Samsonov has 52 wins in 89 games over 3 years with the Caps and a .902 Sv% and a GAA of 2.81. The kid is only 25 years old, it takes time for goalie to figure things out and reach his potential but he has pedigree as a first round draft pick (22nd overall). He's NHL caliber, if not a star yet.

His short track record behind the Caps is .913, then .902, and finally .896 last year with the Caps then completely giving up on him.

Nothing wrong with where Sammy is at: as you say he is only 25 years old with potential and it takes time. But he is a gamble for the season in front of us.

Respectfully though, easier said than done. Neither of their goalies have the post season track record to expect anything at this point.

May very well happen, but they've got to play, and actually win those games first.

Let's just completely ignore the middle 40 games right? Flash...its gone!
Every game counts the same in the standings, whether its in Nov or April.. Campbell's 2021-22 GA/g 2.64 (14th best) and .914 sv% (15th best) overall on the season as whole, includes all the months including middle 40 games in the schedule, they're not ignored in the larger sample size. It appears you want to exclude the goods ones and only include the ones you don't like. :wg:

Jack Campbell won 31 games and contributed 68 points last season based on a season overall average of .914 sv%, including the middle 40 which lead to a record setting 115 point team in the standings,

Take away the other 40 games where he posted above league average .908 sv% numbers and where would the Leafs be in the final standings if not for Campell's strong play?

We are about to find out that answer because the new players stats don't compare favourably and fall far below Jack's performance on the past season.

Yup, Campbell had a pretty good season last year. Some bumps, but pretty good.

you're right - you should never ignore the larger sample size.

Leafs Goaltending 21-22: .8997sv% (#22), -33gsax (#27)

Fair enough. Griess is a .921 post season but his sample size is small. Binner is a modest .910 but coming off a .949 and has a cup run.

Playoff stars might be a stretch but I was thinking as a Blues fan I'd be feeling pretty good about going into the playoffs goalie wise.

So he proved it was the shitty goaltending from Campbell/Mrazek that sunk the Leafs and nothing else. He's finally catching on!!

Your sample sizes change so often that it is hard to keep track of what is relevant to you, 1 year, 3 years, 8 games, 20 games, who knows.

Campbell was trash last year.
