Official New Year Training Camp thread

  • Xenforo Cloud has upgraded us to version 2.3.6. Please report any issues you experience.
With traning camp beginning Sunday, may as well start this up. Leafs are probably going to announce their camp roster any time now.

Leafs speaking to media Sunday. On ice stuff begin Monday.

Trevor Lewis won't be there. He is going to Winnipeg.

I imagine they are going to offer some guys they may look at for either the taxi-squad or the AHL. They brought in guys like Matt Read last year on a PTO and then brought him in on an AHL deal after that, so there will likely be a few moves like that for the Marlies. They need a defensive defenseman for depth, assuming Marincin and Rosen are on the taxi-squad, and at least one forward if Malgin is not coming back over this year.

Not all of those guys will be there on a PTO, since they can only have like 36 skaters (plus like 5 goalies) in total I think, but there should still be a number of moves.

We haven't been linked to any now that Lewis is in Winnipeg.

I personally hope some younger guys like Perlini or Bowey (he is a defenseman but we still need someone and he would be a good fit for the Marlies or on the taxi squad).

Otherwise we could look at Gauthier (if he is not in Arizona) or Nick Shore again. Maybe Brett Ritchie or Brendan Gaunce if we want some size.

Why do you have a PTO next to Malgin's name? He has a 1 year $700,000 contract for the 2020-21 season.

I think this will be the final lineup when it all comes down to it. Happy with that.

PP1:

Nylander
Marner ---- Tavares -- Matthews
Rielly

PP2:

Mikheyev
Spezza ---- Kerfoot -- Thornton
Muzzin

PK1:

Mikheyev-Engvall
Muzzin-Holl

PK2:

Kerfoot-Hyman
Brodie-Bogosian

Zeke, what about Brodie QB on PP2 instead of Muzz. Move back Muzz to PK? I like Muzz shot just worried about his skating ability incase if PP boys mess up and we gotta go back.

Honestly all of muzz/brodie/dermott are capable. And of course lehtonen and Sandin when they are in.

And Hyman might have earned himself another look on PP2 too.

Even Strength point paces last 5yrs, from most recent to oldest:

Rielly: 35, 51, 29, 24, 27 ----> 39 last 3yrs, 33 last 5yrs
Barrie: 32, 36, 33, 31, 27 ----> 33 last 3yrs, 32 last 5yrs
Muzzin: 34, 32, 30, 18, 26 --> 32 last 3yrs, 28 last 5yrs
Brodie: 23, 30, 24, 22, 40 ---> 26 last 3yrs, 28 last 5yrs

Muzzin's offense gets plenty underrated. And his big shot is a nice change of pace on PP2 too.

I'm not sure what the bottom 6 will look like, but the Leafs have a lot of NHLers to choose from. All of Kerfoot, Thornton, Spezza, Barabanov, Engvall, Brooks, Robertson, Agostino, Simmonds, Boyd, Vesey, Petan, Malgin, Korshkov, and Anderson could reasonable slot in somewhere there

Still think one of those PTO's should be some grease. Roster is still not tough enough. Banking on the core to become tough is a fools bet IMO. They haven't shown the compete, the hunger. We need a roster that covers this weakness and can play the game they can't.

Pretty much what I got too. Only thing I'm not sure of is Engvall in the starting 12 or taxi squad for one of the other 4 forwards on your taxi squad. Though Engvall is probably going to get it.

Bringing in a PTO, that won’t see game play, or very restricted playing time, isn’t going to change the mentality of the team. No matter who you bring in, if our core don’t show the compete, the hunger you speak of, it won’t matter anyway.

Not sure I like the idea of a Thornton Kerfoot Spezza line, seems like too much passing.

I didn't mind Kerfoot on Tavares wing, maybe something like

Kerfoot Tavares Nylander
Soup- Thornton- Simmonds/Anderson
Barabanov/engvall/Vesey - Spezza - Simmonds/Anderson

Not sure how that looks capwise.. and there's the Robertson wildcard in there... So many options. Excited to see how the roster shakes out.
