Official 2025 NHL DRAFT Discussion (UPD: UHC wins 2nd Lottery, will have 4OA pick.)

I just think Sabres are in a constant state of rebuilding, whether intentionally or not … Thompson is almost in his prime and we know BA is a fan ..but maybe we aren’t good partners with Buffalo 🦬

Ask is going to be a lot.....

Thompson is signed through 2029-30 at $7.1 AAV. His modified NTC kicks in this coming season.

Sabres also have most of their picks as well.
In my humble opinion, the Sabres will be buyers, not sellers. They cannot, and will not, be mired in a perpetual rebuild. They need to start being more competitive. I think they'll start using some of their defensive strength to acquire players where needed.

Depends on Buffalo’s intentions this offseason, and I don’t really have a read on what I think they might do. A package involving 4th overall going their way and Tage Thompson coming back our way, with whatever’s necessary to include to balance value out, may simply be a trade they’re not interested in making because it’s not a direction they want to head into.

If they do want to pull the plug and start over, we could surely come up with something to entice them, which would be a tough pill to swallow after so many years in a row of not making the playoffs. If that’s not their vision going forward, I don’t think we make good trading partners with Buffalo.
Only thing that makes me think there is even a remote chance of it happening is because they have a habit of "giving up" on what they have. While I don't find the idea as laughable as Jakey, I also don't hold much hope.

That's all been said in the past, but the perpetual rebuild seems to live on.

IMO Buffalo's rebuild ended long ago.

Since then they've been failing at taking what they got out of their rebuild along with futures and using them to retool and get over the hump.

Poor asset management and roster building. Spinning their wheels but going nowhere.

My semantics dictates that a rebuild is not complete until there is success. :laugh: Of course then success needs to be defined. :D

I think Buffalo will be a player in the UFA market. They NEED to be a playoff contender. The franchise is a disaster.

Misa -> Barzal
Desnoyers -> Toews
Martone -> Vilardi
Hagens -> Cooley
Frondell -> Horvat
O'Brien -> D Strome
McQueen -> Byfield
Martin -> Bennett
Eklund -> Eklund

Doin this for my own fun. Feel free to roast me anyways.

Still waiting on the combine and Memorial Cup to finish before deciding on if moving back in the draft would be a good idea.

Going to be very interesting if the NYI really want to trade for that pick. Will the Flyers move up to 3rd to pick Calib Desnoyers? They have the assets and there will be a run of centers between the 2 picks. Chicago could end up with the 6th, 22nd, 30th to go along with the 25th and 34th they already owned.

What does your top 5 look like?

1 - Misa
2 - Schaefer
3 - Hagens
4 - Desnoyers
5 - Martone

I know Schaefer is considered to be the consensus #1, but I really like Misa and I really like Ecklund in that 2nd tier and considering moving him ahead of Martone into the top 5

6 - Ecklund
7 - Frondell
8 - McQueen
9 - Smith
10 - Martin

Scott Wheeler predicts we take Desnoyers

Craig Button thinks Martone is the 4th best....

Another vote for Martone.....

I'm for taking the pick. Desnoyers or Hagens at 4. We need quality way more than quantity so I'm not interested in moving down for extra assets.

BPA @ 4
I completely agree. We don't need anymore draft picks, I would be disappointed if we traded down for more picks. As long as they take the best player available or trade the pick, I'll be happy.

I think it's totally reasonable to have Misa at 1 OA. I think there's a bit more confidence among scouts that Schaefer becomes a 1D like Heiskanen compared to Misa's likelihood of becoming a 1C like Barzal. However, both cases seem very likely. If I had to choose between Barzal or Heiskanen I'd go with Barzal.

Normally I would take Heiskanen as BPA, however, the C position has been so elusive for this team (and the other team I normally follow) that I would take the C.

I wouldn't at all be surprised if the 4th overall pick was traded away for immediate help in the form of a center. The young core is ready to compete, the organization is ready and wanting to take the next step, which is the playoffs.

Next season Cooley is 21, Guenther is 22, Sergachev is 27, Keller is 27, Hayton is 25, Kesselring is 25, McBain is 25, Doan is 23. It's time to make the rebuild Armstrong put the organization through come to fruition and take the next step.

They still have some nice kids in the fold too, word in the world wide web is Daniil But & Dmitri Simashev are expected to sign with the club next week and join the team next season. Those are some big lads at 6'6" & 6'5" respectively!!! They also have a fantastic talent in Tig Iginla developing too.

@Freakshow can you name a young C that we would trade 4 OA for that another club would be willing to part with?
It doesn't have to be a "young" center, just a center who will help them get to that next level. I get it, you want a young'ish center if you're giving up the 4th overall, but, in reality they just want to get into the playoffs and keep the positive momentum in Utah going forward for the city and the state.

Yzerman seems pissed at Larkin in Detroit for speaking out about not acquiring anyone at the deadline, Elias Pettersson had an off-year in Vancouver and they've said they'd listen to offers, the NYI might want to rebuild fully now that they're hiring new management and have the 1st overall pick, which could potentially put both Barzal & Horvat on the market.

Keep in mind, this isn't a 4th OA for a center deal, there will be (in my opinion) multiple players involved. Just spitballing is all.
