Official 2025 NHL DRAFT Discussion (UPD: UHC wins 2nd Lottery, will have 4OA pick.)

Mostly just trying to decide who I like best and rationalize why. Hagens worries me a little bit though. Not really sure if he should.
I wouldn’t worry about Hagens … I have a feeling BA goes off the board “ smartest guy in the room “ and grabs the first Russian

However I would not be against getting Martone if he is available

I like Martone but man, it will hurt me if we end up with a winger. I guess that just means we will still have to decide who goes in a large trade for a real 2C, if the opportunity even arises.

Maybe I shouldn't view this pick as being the only or best solution to ending 20 years + of bad C depth, but I just can't help it.

Maybe Frondell or Desmoyers is the safest pick at 4.. Hagen was considered number 1 last year

Or maybe trade the 4th and a player for a good Center

I'm leaning towards one of those 3 options at the moment (Fron, Desmo, or trade.) Probably will flip-flop a hundred times before the draft lol. I'm still at a point where I can be easily swayed in just about any direction as long as the player is a C and someone has something nice to say about the player lol.

I wonder if SJ could be enticed into a swap. Maybe Lamoureux could work in a deal to move up two spots? SJ avoids getting out of the draft without any immediate young defensive help and Martone would still be a great pick with potential to complement Celebrini or Smith.

I think Misa is pretty clearly the best forward available. Spezza, McDavid, Gagner, Tavares, and Marner are the only other 17yo to finish 2+pt/g in the OHL in the last 30 years

Doesn't McQueen seem like a guy BA could go off the board for? I haven't researched him much but a 6'5", 192lb., strong skating, agile, net front C with some grit (based on the little I have read) should get BA really excited. It does it for me anyways.

Heard he could've been 1OA contender if it weren't for his back injury. I couldn't tell ya how concerned we should be over the possibility of persistent back issues with him in the future, but if the team is 100% comfortable with his recovery, medical reports, etc. then maybe taking him at 4OA isn't really that much of a reach? I read that he is comparable to a Jordan Staal or Jordan Greenway.

Interested in anyone else's take on McQueen. I don't recall who, but I do recall someone already saying he's a hell to the no for them because of said injury. Seems like a common take but I'd like to know more.

I remember Connor Murphy slipping in his draft...

I think 4th overall is too high to take a gamble on McQueen. Obviously there is a risk that any drafted any player may not turn out, but I'd rather BA go the more safe route. I don't want another Martin Hanzal with the nagging back issues.

Mostly every predictive value chart I've seen have the difference of 2 to 4 at around a 1st round 16-24 ov pick of difference. 2 2nds wouldn't be enough to interest the Sharks, unless they really valued a different player other than Misa and were planning on picking them anyway, which seems unlikely. Given the general conscious of the player outlooks, it's a top 4 D & a 2C for a 1C, which seems more than fair for Utah.

Move up, sure. But not with MavLam.

4OV and two 2nds for 2OV is fair value.

SJ should still be in the asset collection phase so two free picks is a nice get.
Not sure I totally agree with you on this. SJ have many great prospects, some probably will make a jump next year. They may want a NHL player + in any deal. Not saying MavLam is the player they want. I think SJ keeps the pick. NYI could be swayed with picks and or players. They need assets more than SJ in my opinion.

Sharks have an extra first and extra second in each of the next two drafts. While you can never have too many picks, I'd rather take my first choice forward (Misa), then risk getting my third choice (Martone of Desnoyers).

I will say Lamoureux would be well up Grier's alley- it was rumoured he asked about Bischel before settling on the first in the Granlund trade to DAL. That proposal. would certainly have my attention. A pair of seconds would hold no interest.

Grier loves size, reach, and skating on the backend (Dickinson, Muk) and we don't have legitimate RHD in the prospect pool, aside from Pohlkamp (4/5 guy, if we're real lucky). I could see Utah being equally content to stand pat at 4.

On the flip side, if we could move up to one, I'd be willing to give DAL 1st, our/Ott's second, and also take back a small but bad contract (Duclair, Engval).

BPA

(Misa & Schaefer will be off the board by No. 4)

"The game changes in the playoffs. People don't understand. There's 28 more hits per game in the playoffs. It's a different animal. It's played at a different level... and size comes into factor."

BPA is a 6'3" RW power forward who can rack up points and shows up in playoffs.

What would it take to move from 4th to 1st? Hagens +(?) -> Misa

I imagine they'll want an NHL center and Skahan (BC teammate), they could put forth a mini-rebuild/retool too, Utah could offer at least 4 good assets .: Hagens, Skahan, Nordh, Allard, Kipkie, Lavoie, Beaudoin, GabeSmith, to name a few.

Just the memes alone would make it worth it, the optics of having #1 pick, and announcing the UTAH MAMMOTHS @ the draft would make it priceless...

If Martone is available at 4 Utah takes him right? Or do they go C regardless (noting McQueen is ranked 7th by the Bobfather )

McQueen's ranking will move on the final version, when more info is available on his playoff injury. If it was his back then he'll move down, if it wasn't then he'll move up.

Martone is definitely not a given. I suspect Desnoyers goes ahead of him regardless.

A note about all these lists......

BA is going to take who his staff thinks is the BPA at #4.

I don't recall Simachev and But being on a lot of lists, but he took them.
I don't follow the prospects so well due to lack of time, but do we know if the team still has a leg up in terms of Russian scouting? I know part of Simashev and But being drafted where they were was based on the Coyotes taking advantage of a dearth of scouting going on over there post-Covid and with the war; I'd assume that gap has been reduced.

I'm not under the assumption there's a preference for Russian players, just that they were generally ranked lower overall previously because there was low information on them.

NYI Schaefer
SJS Misa
CHI Desnoyers
UTA McQueen

If it gets confirmed that McQueen's playoff "lower body" injury was unrelated to his back injury, then I think this is how things go down.

If his back is still a concern, then I would go with Frondell, but I don't have a hunch which way Bill will go.

I really hope BA trades the pick. The return should be more value than the pick.
Absolutely not. If we were at 14, I'd agree with you, but this is pick 4. Take the top talent and walk away stupid happy. We have 4 more 2nd and a 1st over this draft and next. Move any and all of those if you want, but we just got a gift.
