Its literally a single shot attempt. Someone make the scorn directed against it make sense.
Marek did make an interesting point, asking, "If a player does a Michigan, and hits the goalie in the mask, should it be a high sticking penalty?"

You could say it's a follow through on a shot, but the Michigan is different enough in that you're purposefully putting your stick near the goalie's face that I can see the argument.

If a player has the puck that close to the goal front, the defense should be collapsing on him. One of his teammates has to be open for a pass and a quick high scoring chance shot on net. Might be better for the team to make that pass.

Or...every situation is different. Its really no different than the extremely common wrap-around attempt which are very low percentage due to how well goalies cover down low now. Forwards adapt and are going up high where there is available net.

But it is different. If the offensive player’s stick hits the goalie in the head, which it could with this play, is it not high sticking?

Shot follow-through is not high-sticking so they wouldn't call that. They'll probably look at that in the offseason thanks to all of the incessant bitching that's been going on about it.
