Honestly, given what they've done, each of our 3 catchers would be top 30 in baseball with starter playing time (they are all significant upgrades over both catchers in the Bronx for example).
Agreed. It makes me wonder if the sense is there are team(s) nearly willing to pull the trigger on a deal after seeing what they had in-house during spring training. Especially bubble teams/contenders who can't afford a black hole at catcher.

All the news. Berrios opening day starter, Romano hurts his ankle on a dog walk, Kirk starting over Jansen opening day (maybe he is hurt?), Bryan Reynolds trade incoming...what else?

I think that's aggressive on McGuire (despite a solid season last year, I still think he's just a defense-first backup), but he would definitely be an improvement on a bunch of teams.

I don’t think we’ll get Bryan Reynolds, but could’ve been a pivot option seeing as CLE and JRam are talking extension

Tbf McGuire was 22nd in fWAR for catchers last year in only 217 PA. Thr only guys above him with less PA were Jano and Pina.

For how trash that position is, you could do much worse than him being your starter. We're just spoiled with Jano, Kirk, and Moreno

22nd with a 78wRC+ and 217PA. More playing means more production because his D side is that good.

The Yanks starter was worse at offense AND defense than McGuire last year and Rortvedt has 39 games in the majors and one MiLB season above 101 wRC+.

Sounds very interesting. Blair and Barker mentioned the Jays wanting to move McGuire to give Kirk reps at the MLB level. So that maybe an option but their plan could be to move Kirk to lineup Jansen and Moreno later in the season.

However, to the poster who outlined Brian Reynolds, he makes a lot of sense for the Jays. The rumor is Cherington, the Pirates' GM (formerly the Jays AGM) has been after Kirk for years. Ben wanted Kirk in a potential Musgrove deal last year which fell through.

Jays wanted the switch hitting Ramirez to balance out the lineup and they were also interested in Marte. Marte just signed an extension and the Guadians and Ramirez are talking about an extension. It sounds like Cleveland wants to keep Ramirez and Ramirez wants to stay.

So the Jays could smartly pivot to switch hitting Brian Reynolds to play CF as Springer cant play there for a full season. Reynolds put up 4.2 WAR in 2019 and 6.5 WAR last season. Getting a switch hitter who can get Springer out of CF and off his feet while clearing your backlog at catcher is a nice piece of business.

Cherington was heavily involved with the drafting of Pearson and Groshans. He also has Espinal in Boston when he was the GM. I wonder if Kirk, Espinal and Pearson gets Reynolds. Or maybe Kirk, Espinal, Groshans and Kloffenstein.

Would like to keep Espinal but Renoylds has 4 more years of control which is 2 more than Ramirez. It will take a lot to get him.

The other side of that could be that Cherington might have interest in Jansen. While we talk up Kirk's bat, if Jansen ever were to consistently bat the way he did down the stretch last year, he's a top 5 catcher in baseball.

I don't trust Kirk's glove as the primary catcher and I don't want McGuire having to play significant time because Kirk can't figure it out. No chance we should trade Jano until Moreno shows he's ready for full-time.

It depends for me on how highly Pittsburgh values Jansen. Reynolds for Jansen straight up would be very difficult to say no to. Reynolds for Jansen and a valuable piece I wouldn't do.
