I assume Zimmer wasn't available when they traded for Tapia. Definitely redundant but if they liked Zimmer and have the roster spot no big deal.

It definitely feels like they've acquired two of the same player and it will be interesting to see how it plays out.

They're not really the same though other than both being OF and fast.

Tapia is a slap-hitting primary left fielder. Zimmer is a power-hitting primary CF

Of course but same role as speedy defense-first 4th OF with CF utility. They've basically double-replaced Grichuk.

Would also add that Zimmer has never translated his tools into HR totals at any level, really.

As was noted above, it feels like they made the Tapia trade and then a guy they liked better became available and now something has to give.

That would be my best guess, too. And for now it's fine because both trades make sense and because the roster works just fine the way it is. I would still prefer Collins in the minors and Katoh up, but neither is likely to contribute much and they both stay in the organization anyway.

Now it's basically a battle to see which of Tapia and Zimmer can play better and really earn the playing time.

Jansen has legitimately been the Jays best hitter through 2 games. Really sucks that Collins is getting into the lineup ahead of him. I get it. But I don't like it.

I don’t think Tapia and Zimmer are really all that similar. What they have in common is both are speedy left handed batting OF’s. That’s where the similarities end.

Zimmer is faster with more power and a much better defender (true CFer with a decent arm). Zimmer also strikes out at a very high rate.

Tapia has a much better hit tool, with very low strikeout rates. He also won’t walk a ton. In the OF he’s probably best in LF, perhaps passable in CF but not someone you want playing there regularly.

Ultimately, I don’t want either playing daily, but they’ll fill a role. In my opinion, Zimmer is the better bet as a late game pinch runner or defender. Tapia is probably the better option to give a corner OF a day off as he won’t hurt the lineup terribly.

Thornton DFA? Saucedo has been bad but I don't think they'd DFA him yet

I think I would DFA Saucedo before Thornton. Saucedo would have had a role as a LOOGY before the batter-faced minimum came into play, but he's so completely useless against righties that he's just not worth the spot.

I like the idea of a Tapia type player on the roster but why have him and Zimmer for the same role? Especially when Biggio can take some turns in the OF if injuries warrant it
That last little cluster trades didn’t really make sense. Reese a defence first catcher traded for an offence first catcher. I get he has options but he’s with the team now. Tapia made sense at the time to save some cash but Zimmer like you said doesn’t really make much sense. Especially with Montoyo at the helm
