'“(Toronto) has got a ton of buzz around it, as do we. They’ve made a lot of really positive changes,” Woodward said. “They lost their best player last year, in my opinion, but we were able to get that one in Marcus.”'

Texas made a couple splashy, huge-money moves that might help them climb close to .500. Yay!

I know a lot of people like the moves they made, but imagine spending half a billion dollars to improve a 100-loss team and still going into the season with Jon Gray, Martin Perez and Dane Dunning at the top of your rotation?

175 million is a lot for Semien. Baseballtradevalues.com has Semien's market value at -21.9 and Seager at -28.2. I'm not a fan of either of those contracts but it seems a bit extreme but their not far off. They also doubled Ramirez's trade value after he extended.

Overall: 4th in WAR

  • C - 6th
  • 1B - 1st
  • 2B - 25th
  • 3rd - 7th
  • SS - 6th
  • RF - 21st
  • CF - 7th
  • LF - 25th
  • DH - 8th
  • SP - 9th
  • RP - 13th
Notes:

  • Jays dropped at C (Was 4th) due to the Reese trade but improved at DH (Was 14th) with Bird's release due to his PA going to Kirk
  • Needs to also be stated they expect Teo to be Top 10 as he has crushed the model the last 2 years

I'd like to remind people that have concerns about the pen: they were the best unit in the majors through the first two months before everyone died and ended up on the DL.

They cleared out some of the trash like Chatwood, Dolis and such and you got some potential additions by addition with Stripling getting moved there and Pearson.

It won't be nearly as bad as last season. Guaranteed.

No. No real high leverage arms that feel safe other than Romano, who is currently hurt. It's our biggest weakness, imo. Hopefully we can address it in-season.
I'm comfortable with the way it looks now because I don't think it needs to be dominant... just hold down the fort instead of lighting it on fire like last year.

And then, like you said, make some additions throughout the season as needed. My biggest concern there is the acquisition cost for a high-leverage rental, but we'll see how things play out.

Agreed. That, combined with a deeper starting rotation should put us in a good position if we stay relatively healthy.

I didn't know Romano is hurt, damn.

If we had 2 more power arms at the back end of the bullpen it would push everyone down a notch and it would look much better. Garcia, Phelps, Mayza, Cimber and Richards would be used in the 6 to 7th inning range where they would dominate instead of combining for the 7th, 8th and sometimes 9th. They might be ok but it looks average to me.

Romano is fine. He hurt his ankle, but has pitched since.

I am very nervous about our pen. While we have Cimber and Richards for stability, it is arguably weaker on paper than last year's (no Yates going in).

FanGraphs has our pen 13th (which sounds about right).

plus a bunch of 0s.

Edit: For context, 1 WAR better (4 instead of 3) would put us 4th overall and 1 WAR worse (2 instead of 3) would put us T-16.

Last year's pen was at 1.6 (with Romano, Mayza, Cimber and Phelps being 3.2 and the entire rest of the pen being -1.6).

Not a ton of options out there for relief. Any legitimate options from bottom end teams tend to be on pre-arb contracts and would likely command way too much from the Jays. Tbh I'd take a stab at Bard (yes that one) on the Rockies. He had "sophomore" slump last season but honestly, reverse home/away splits for Colorado? If he can keep the ball in at that park I'd take my chances.

edit:

Rosenthal in F/A too.

So they did bring Collins.

Yes, he was recalled as a corresponding move against one of the IL moves.

Also, with 15/13, that roster spot is still going to exist May 2 whether he is using it or whether we call up an OF at some point (ie we have 13 non-pitchers and have to have 13 on May 2).

He got his bag. That deal would make him the third highest paid player in the NHL!

...oh, you say he plays baseball? Uhhhhhh.

I don't understand that one at all. Who takes that little of money and then who willingly decides to sign for 8 years in god damn Pittsburgh.

Rosenthal would be a wonderful guy to target

I still don't love Collins being on the roster - just let him work it out in AAA. I do like that this basically guarantees a lot of DH time for Kirk, so that's good, I guess.

He still has his option status for this year I believe so it seems like this might just be a case of him keeping the seat warm for a couple months until Moreno is ready. Then you can bring Moreno up, send Collins down and Kirk can more regularly DH as you heavily split the catching duties between Jansen and Moreno.

Yes but he also has a full no trade contract.
