Just like I think it is better for the Jays to try to be competitive for the next 10-20 years rather than go all in on a 2-3 year window.

 Where does anyone get off thinking that 1-2 prospects = 20 years of sustained success? This is ridiculous. Getting dickey will reduce our team's quality for 17 years? This is the Jays, we haven't been competitive for 20 years, now everyone thinks we'll be a long term powerhouse? Lets make it those 2-3 years first before we start talking dynasties and long term favorites.

Gardiner for Thomas?? If the Leafs made that move last season, they make the playoffs.

Thanks god I'm a Jays fan living in Ottawa, you Toronto citizens are absolutely off the wall.

Agreed. One of the reasons I no longer post on the Leafs forum outside of this thread. And I'm from Toronto.

Wow we are tearing through threads. I stopped for a couple hours and the thread is dead.

Agreed. It might hurt our prospect pool for right now but we will get a prospect in return, we have the 10th overall pick, plus AA has stocked the cupboard once so i assume he can do it again.

Ok i don't want both TDA and Synd gone.. I really wanted TDA here, as people have mentioned you usually don't find a star Catcher like him.

However, for those saying trading those guys will hurt us for 10-20 years.

When the Yankees and other teams win, it's easier to draw talent in.

Just got to trust in AA he's done well so far, and hasn't shown us a reason to not trust him. He's making sure of a extension before the trade, so he knows not to just hand out his prospects for a potential rental.

Well, now that the rumored deal has been confirmed (pending the Jays ability to sign Dickey to an extension by 2pm on Tuesday), the majority of baseball pundits seem to think that the Jays have overpaid. I agree with that assessment.

If the deal is consumated by Tuesday, the Jays will have to look the part of World Series contenders for the next few years or the trade could very well end up as a seriously lopsided transaction down the road.

However, despite my objections to the Jays agreeing to the excessive asking price of the Mets to acquire Dickey (assuming he agrees to an extension), I have to give AA serious kudos for going balls out to bring the World Series back to T.O.

The strength of our opening day roster from top to bottom compared to last year will be like night and day. It has been one of the most remarkable off season makeovers that I can recall in my lifetime of watching professional sports.

Don't like being called out saying "is this guy for real" you damn right I am. I only say things when I can back it up, and was curious to see what the Rays projected rotation was next year on different sites.

Not even sure how we got discussing the Rays anyway.

This should be about the Jays and how extremely stacked they are. Just be happy people and enjoy an absolute beast of a team that our amazing GM has assembled over the last 5 weeks.

This also isnt just homerism when evaluating our teams roster.......Vegas even agrees and will most likely have us as the 1st or 2nd favorite.

Dickey is going to be a lot of fun to watch for you guys. Most interesting player in the game right now imo. I've been a Mets fan all my life, and that hasn't been easy (of course), but after they finalize this I really just want to be done with them. We have a guy win the batting title and don't bring him back the next year, now we have a guy win the cy young and don't bring him back the next year? I'm probably going to look to be a Jays fan since you'll have better Mets (Reyes and Dickey) than the Mets will have.

To the person who asked about Buerhle; this is what I've read. (I'm on my cell so no source but it was an interview).

- Upset with Miami since, in discussion, they basically said he'd never be traded.
- Very excited to be a Blue Jay and John Buck has done nothing but talk about how great Toronto is.
- Said organization is extremely helpful as they are working hard to find a solution for Buerhle and his dog.
- A soon as the trade happened, his wife immediately got on the phone to start campaigning for the bylaw to be dropped (it was almost dropped a year or two ago). Said the Blue Jays are doing so much with her to help.
- Said his wife/kids/dogs will probably stay in Miami for now until something can be worked out with the dog. Under no circumstances will the dog be left behind.
- Very excited for a new start and to play with a contender in Toronto.

The smartest part about this trade (if it goes through) is that we are acquiring Josh Thole.

Arencibia can barely catch a regular pitcher, which is to say he cannot catch a knuckleballer. Adding the guy that can catch Dickey and has proven success with him makes a ton of sense.

This is the first move AA has made that I really didn't like...wasn't hot on Gibbons coming back either but I trust AA on that one. This just feels like an awful overpayment; I don't mind the idea of moving prospects to get tier-1 talent for a run right now, but I think we could be getting more bang for our buck with two incredible prospects than a 38 year old whose success last season could very well have been a flash in the pan. Honestly, anything short of a Pennant while Dickey is here and this deal will feel awful for us, and it won't actually feel good unless we win the World Series. The Cabrera signing and Marlins trades were both absolutely fantastic, so I'm still happy with this offseason overall, but boy are we giving up a lot for one guy here...

It's pretty obvious that most teams who use a Knuckler need to rely on a specialist to catch him (i.e. Doug Mirabelli). However there is not need to attack JPA. Somewhat ironic you posted how glad you were that the other thread was closed given your contributions.

It's not as easy now as it was before. Before the Jays could build value in replaceable parts like relievers, get them to type A and B status, and hoard draft picks for letting them leave, and then fill their spots easily enough. The compensatory pick rules have been tightened and with the slotting/budget rules in place, it's not as easy for the team now to flood the system with potential blue-chippers the way they have in the past.

Very true. I remember when AA spent a lot of time acquiring those compensation picks. Very savvy move.

I'd stick with the Mets if this deal goes through, it is VERY good for them; D'Arnaud and Syndergaard are both top-notch prospects, and if your team isn't planning to make a run at the WS in the next few years, it makes sense to move Dickey now while his value is at its highest.

c'mon guys. wasn't kidding about threadbans if things start to slide again. Critique the post, not the poster. Leave personal issues or attacks on other users out of it. I don't like threadbanning people, but it beats spending all my time putting out fires.

Prospects =/= established major leagues who can contribute to a contending team in 2013.

I don't see what was wrong with the comment you posted; JPA's catching ability is definitely below-average, and having him catch Dickey would likely be a nightmare. That we are getting Dickey's catcher as well definitely makes me feel better about this trade.

Lol he is a perfectly fine catcher. He's average at worst

Not true.
He is below average defensively tho he has improved. His trowing arm isnt average.
He strikes out a ton, and cant get on base.

His only good tool is his power and that isnt enough to make up for the rest of his faults.
