I agree. 12 teams are perfect. But picking who you play is amateurishChoosing one’s playoff opponent is completely lame.
But glad progress is being made.
Man i'm still not in favor of the 6 team playoff stuff.
How often do you get a situation where multiple teams that you can say legit deserved to be there miss? Sure Jays/Mariners fans got kinda hosed but at the same time the cynical side of me would argue that those teams should have also taken care of business against the Tigers and Angels respectively down the stretch if they really deserved to be there.
It just can not be in a 1 game playoff and it is fine with me. I am okay with more playoff teams simply for the selfish reason that I am a Jays fan and we are in the division we are in. I am okay with being selfish on this one.Everyone will love expanded playoffs until their 97 win 2-seed gets knocked out by some 82-80 team.

Meanwhile you look at the NL where a 6 team system puts a very mediocre Cincy team in at 83-79
During the shortened season i understood, but now? nah. Not to mention you almost assuredly have to put in some type of bye system to even out the rounds and baseball is probably the last sport where i want a good team sitting for a week between the end of the season and their first postseason game
If anything you expand the wild card game to a best of 3 and call it a day there.
Joc Peterson sums it up nicely
I mean, by the same reasoning a 1 seed should be able to take out that Cincinnati team relatively easily in a 3 game series.
To be fair, that kind of stuff has been happening for years. Obviously there would be a greater chance of that happening with more/worse teams in the playoffs, but still...

An interesting point that I've heard about expanded playoffs is that it gives a greater chance of the game's stars being in the playoffs.

Probability wise (assuming a ~4% HFA rate) a 100 win team would win a three game series against an 81 win team ~69% of the time (72% if all three games were at the 100 win team's stadium).
Is that a fair tradeoff for winning 19 more games in the regular season, especially when accounting for the specific value of those 19 wins? I don't think its remotely close. Just completely neuters the meaning of the regular season.
Yes I steadfastly remain a 1993-style playoff/league schedule guy but I know we'll never go backwards (although a balanced schedule needed to be implemented yesterday).
How many summers were the Jays out by May? I am all for expanding the playoffs. Upsets happen.

Good post. No it's not a fair tradeoff, but what about how an expanded playoff may cause teams to get their shit together. Instead of fighting for a 1 game series if you're the clear 2nd best team in your division you now have the opportunity to play 3 games.
They need to find a way to make it so teams are less okay with losing. An expanded playoff may make it more likely you get #6 seeds like the Jays instead of ones like Cincinnati.
And if you come in 4th place in a 5 team division you don't deserve it either.
Even if you win more games than the eventual World Series winner?
This is where the issue needs to be fixed. Why in the hell does atlanta get a better draft pick then the jays? Playoff teams should not draft higher then teams that miss the playoffsEven if you win more games than the eventual World Series winner?
