33 years old and a $10 million flyer...unreal.

He should be a prove-it signing.
Good luck with that Boston.

Yeah, this one is nuts. Because of the injury risk, he had to take an $8.5 million deal last year. Then he missed the entire season, had TJ, and likely won't be ready for opening day... and Boston's giving him MORE than last year? Yikes.

With the deadline tonight, players apparently needing a physical and all these teams having calls announcing their signings and making them official on social media, certainly feels like nothing more will happen before the lockout. Hope to be wrong though!

Can a player not sign a contract prior to the deadline and just be pending passing the physical down the road?

No, but I believe that a motivated player could take a physical on his own and ask his doctor to share the results with the team. In the case of a guy like Paxton, there is no way any sane team would do this, but for most guys, the physical is a formality.

Edit: They could hypothetically sign a memorandum of understanding (saying that neither side can back out of a deal if the player passes the physical), but I don't believe that MLB allows conditional contracts.

At this point, if the length/price is reasonable I'd lock up Bryant. He's a full time 3B with WS & MVP pedigree so he's going to absolutely mash baseballs hitting behind Springer, Bo, Vlad, and Teo with the amount of RBI chances and good pitches he'll be getting to hit.

Biggio/Espinal can platoon at 2B to give both players a chance to prove themselves and if that doesn't work then they can explore a trade elsewhere. Third-base, another starting pitcher and some more bullpen arms are the biggest need right now for the Jays

No. But the team could always waive the physical. Mike Sirotka anyone?

I would have figured he’d have seen it coming in the spring well before any of us simpletons

Actually, he got right around what I expected him to get before he won the Cy Young, but thanks for pointing that out. Another feather for the cap.

But one of the reasons I don't like to stick around much during the offseason is because I don't know how the offseason will shake out. How can I? This isn't like having game footage to analyze. I've got nothing to go on, so I have no idea what's going on...and I never said I did. And neither do any of you. Even that guy who told me Ray was waiting for the CBA to expire turned out to be wrong. Shocker, random tweets from journalists are dubious at best.

Oh, thanks for continually proving how quick you guys are to resort to insults. And all because I point out I was right about something, yeesh. You know, if you guys would quit insulting me, I'd likely post a lot less.

If I am Mathews I am rethinking my decision to play hockey with the crazy money being floated around in baseball.

No kidding. What a jump this year. Screw what people say about players asking for so much money. It's the owners fault for agreeing to pay it.

In a world where coaches often forbid any signs of having fun (because it isn't "professional"), who would have thought that a group of guys obviously having a whole lot of fun while playing the game would be a draw to free agents? It's almost like saying "If you come here, you can be one of us" versus "Come, earn your salary and be a mindless drone".

Can’t lose Gurriel Jr. just for this reason.

Baseball players do put out more personality relatively to hockey players, but still, sometimes it feels too corporate.

Have they retired the Home Run jacket?

Have they retired the Home Run jacket?

it was the idea of the teams interpreter Hector Lebron i think its here to stay for future

The jacket was the brainchild of Lebron as a means to represent the multicultural backgrounds of the team and its fan base. Whether it’s Korea for Hyun-Jin Ryu, Mexico for Alejandro Kirk, the Dominican Republic for Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Canada for Jordan Romano, or Puerto Rico for manager Charlie Montoyo.
The saying “La Gente Del Barrio” was meant as a saying to represent everyone on the team, from the players to the coaches. The Blue Jays are known as “Canada’s team,” but this jacket symbolizes the entire world.

Please sign Bryant would be the cherry on top. Freeman i think is a pipe dream but Bryant is realistic.
