Lol yeah the Mariners are not a bottom dwelling team anymore. I know they played way over thier heads last season but there's a lot of upside on that roster and now they landed a top tier pitcher

The problem with the Mariners is this isn't the first time they've done this.

no expectations -> hang around first half -> catch fire late and make legit push for postseason -> fall just short -> add big names in offseason -> proceed to fall on face

they've done it like twice in the last 20 years and i'm not convinced this isn't another one of those. I hope for Mariners fans this is finally the year they break through since they deserve to see something resembling competent baseball.

I think with Vladdy in better shape now, if they had given him 30-40 games at 3B last year and he was at minimum an average defender and it didn't impact his bat then you could sign a Freeman. But to do it without seeing Vlad prove it would just be a bad resource allocation with so many holes on the roster.

Jays have a weak defense, to begin with. Freeman at first is a decline in defense and putting Vlad at third is a decline. I would much prefer to have a proper 3B. Keep Vlad at first.

How is Freeman's defense at 1st anyways? I'm too lazy to dig into it.

Also would Vlad really be a downgrade at 3B compared to Valera and Biggio?

Forget Freeman. Sure, his bat would be welcome on this team, especially after losing Simien, however the Jays still need to shore up the pitching staff. Both the starters and the bullpen. I'm not confident that job can be done in-house. It looks like Shapiro and Atkins will have to eventually make a trade for more offense.

Gausman and Biggio at 2B for a full year has the potential to cover 80 % of what Semien and Ray will do in 2022. I could easily see Biggio being 4 war at 2B if everything goes right and Semien tapering off a little bit to 5-6 WAR is a possibility.

The Jays just need a legit 3B and a bullpen and their going to eclipse 90 wins.

Totally agree with this. We weaken both 1B and 3B with such a move. Chapman/Ramirez + pitching please.

How wild would the league be if they actually get their way?

Would they just assimilate everyone into two big ass east and west divisions? I don't want a a 12 team postseason and would counter with turning the wild card games into a full on series instead. Sure the AL would have benefited by you're telling me the Reds deserved a playoff spot this year? Nah.

The tweet said they wanted to realign each league into 2 divisions. So, 4 total. That would help fix the weak AL central problem.

And maybe the Reds didn't deserve a playoff spot last year, but can you say Toronto or even Seattle didn't.

Two divisions in each league would be awesome, so you know the league is going to do everything in its power to prevent it from happening.

Only issue with a 2 division per league setup is that you're going to create unbalanced divisions, either by keeping teams in the same league and having to have 1 7-team division and 1 8-team division per league or by evening up the # of teams in each league by shifting one team to the other league at which point league A will have 14 teams in 2 7-team divisions and league B will have 16 teams in 2 8-team divisions.

If it gets the Rays out of our division I’d be willing to do almost anything. ;)

I think the only way that aspect of the deal goes through is if expansion is agreed upon and I think we're headed that way too.

It's one of the few things they'd probably both agree on. Players get more jobs, owners get fat entrance fees with only a couple owners getting pissed off that their market is being infringed upon. I don't think it'd take too long to find buyers in Montreal and Nashville either.

Shore up the pitching? So far as it stands....

Gausman
Berrios
Manoah
Ryu
Pearson/Stripling/Hatch

This is not a staff that is lacking when your current #4 starter was 3rd in Cy Young in 2020. I mean, upgrades are always good, but this is not a dire need.
