I think the concern is that guys like Zibanejad, Kreider, Panarin, Trouba, and Strome, who all make big money or will need to be locked down with big money, are in that 28-31 range where you start to get nervous about their play declining. It feels like, with those five at their ages, you maybe have 2-3 years of their primes left; and the guys like Kakko, Lafreniere, and Kravtsov are maybe still a year or two away from their primes. It's almost like you have the young core and the veteran core, and there's some concern about whether they'll all be performing at a high level at the same time.
I know many people have been saying it for a year or two around here, but it never really struck me as a potential problem until about midway through this season. Of course, if those young guys take a big step next year, all is well, at least for a couple season. But if they continue their deliberate development paths, we could run into a situation where when they are truly ready for prime time, the veteran core is in real decline.
