Canes fans seems a little miffed. That’s always a good sign.

Only because their defensive logjam is even more clogged than ours. This trade makes no sense for them, if you ignore the upside of the two prospects.

Gauthier jumped up in Pronman's latest mid-season prospects rankings. Keane didnt make the list.

56. Julien Gauthier, RW, Carolina (Charlotte-AHL)
Oct. 15, 1997 | 6-foot-4 | 225 pounds
Drafted: 21st-overall (2016)

Previous ranking: Not Ranked
Skating: 55
Puck Skills: 60
Physical Game: 65
Hockey Sense: 55

There’s a part of me that was reluctant to put Gauthier on this list. He’s a third-year pro who has not dominated the AHL. He does have 17 goals in 29 games this season, though, and has a toolkit that screams NHL player. You don’t see many 6-foot-4 forwards who can skate, have legit skill and can score goals like Gauthier does. He may not be the smartest player ever, but he’s shown this season he can make plays and score in hard areas, has earned some NHL games and ticks off most of the boxes you want in a prospect.

To add to this/give context, here's what Corey has to say about the skill ratings:

"I will provide tool grades for players on the 20-80 scale. In this scale, 50 projects as pro average, 55 as above-average, 60 top third, 70 as elite and 80 as among the very best; 45 is below-average and 40 is fringe pro quality. I only grade the shot if it is notably good."

So he projects (according to Pronman) as having above average skating & hockey sense, top 3rd of the league puck skills, and somewhere b/t top 3rd and elite level physical game

Keane is very good, yes. That being said, u have a u20 defensmen breaking shl records, deangelo with 40 points on track for 60, fox with 31 on track for 40-50 and a minutes eating big boy in trouba. We need size and skill, gauthier has it. If i recall correctly, a majority of the board wanted him and a first for kreider. What changed, except now e still have kreider and we dont have to address keanes status?

Personally have never been sold on Keane. He looks like he has an NHL career ahead of him, but he looks more like a RH John Moore than a Jeff Petry or something.

Man, JT Kreider is having a meltdown before our very eyes

Lol, just because I'm going against the grain of some of the kiss asses that change their perspective based on the moves this team makes I'm having a meltdown?

Remember when everyone here was so convinced we were getting Point or Sergachev for McDonagh and then when the real return was announced everyone was like "this is fine, Howden will be great" instead of standing firm with their belief that it had to be Point or bust?

So yeah, dont blame me for not agreeing with the consensus here.
