I don't blame Nylander for this. The difference between Marner and Nylander is closing year after year, and we know Marner is not taking a pay cut on his next contract. Leafs offer at 8.5M would put him maybe 4M behind Marner's next contract, and he's closer to Marner value than 4M imo

We don't know what Marner's next contract will be, but he's still a substantially better player than Nylander when you account for defense.

A trade is different than signing a UFA.

Not many teams have 5.5 to sign a UFA, especially contenders because they are close to the cap, but if you are trading for Nylander some $$ in other players are going back to Toronto.
 
I would wait until Aho signs his extension because he’s a way better player than Nylander and I doubt he signs for much more than 10m per, if he even hits double digits.

That's if the juice is worth the squeeze. So in that case it should be a great player or great assets in which cool.

Ok so what contending team is signing Nylander to 10m x 7 years (70m), if the Leafs hold firm at 8.88m x 8 years (71m) which is more.

Even at 8.88m per, he's getting more money than he can get elsewhere, signing bonus money up front, and a NMC on a contender.

He scored less than huberdeau, gaudreau, fiala, forsberg, meier, laine, bratt at 5v5

Should he deserve a higher salary because hes a better 3v3 player or able to produce a little bit more on pp alongside matthews and marnsr

Man, things get really weird around here when discussing contracts. Arguments that are literally all over the place.

Like, I can go in the Matthews thread and everyone is calling him "selfish" and "greedy" for allegedly wanting a 4 year deal on his first ufa contract. The 4 year term is seen as PLAYER friendly and will maximize Matthews career earnings.

Yet in this thread Tavares would apparently not even consider a 4 year deal on his first ufa contract because I guess a four year term is now magically TEAM friendly, not player friendly.

It makes absolutely no sense.

When did he say term? What term PRECISELY? I'm not looking for a made up term based on rumor. I'm looking for REAL proof and evidence. Not propaganda. And regardless, I don't think it's outside the realm of possibility that agents will exaggerate other offers as a negotiating tactic and a means of damage control. That's why they use VERY vague terms, as they're not outright lying. Just misleading.

STOP presenting rumor as fact. You need to STOP this.
 
9-9.5 doesn’t seem unreasonable for nylander as long as it’s for 8 years. With the cap rising after next year, a fair deal here for both sides will be team friendly before long.

If it takes as much as 10, you do it. I don’t want to lose nylander for 8 years and have to fret about <1 mil because were locked into Kampf and Reaves for almost 4 mill for the next 3/4 years.

If memory serves me right Gaudreau also didn't sign until middle or late July as a UFA though; since he walked away as ufa. both have same agents.

So yea i expect this to play out all summer long, then when season starts they will stop negotiating because "I don't want contract stuff to disturb me in season, i just want to focus on playing" simply put.... If by the season opener the deal isn't signed, Willy is either getting traded (don't think we will get a good return for 1 yr rental unless it is sign and trade but now sure how sign and trade will work either with teh cap); or he is walking directly to the UFA market and going to the highest bidder

Given Treliving's history with Gaudreau and Gross I think Tre will be more proactive instead of reactive. At least that is my guess based on some of his takes in the interviews he has done i.e. "lessons learned"
 
9 at most, Love Willy and I'd choose him over Marner, but one of them has to go and I just cannot see the Leafs org having the guts to move Marner. If we do trade Willy, I hope it's for a Muzzin replacement that gives us a bit of cap space.
