That's the thing though...we don't reset the market...we just pay more than anyone else and they refuse to pay these garbage deals we gave out. We are literally on a different salary cap than other contenders because we constantly over pay our top guys. And before I hear the "I would rather overpay Mitch than a 3rd liner" spiel...We can't use that as an excuse because Jim Benning decided to do it multiple times. Good GM's limit their mistakes...bad ones don't.

Personally I would have traded Marner long time ago. His game will never translate well in playoffs. The guys plays like a wuss and makes too many dumbheaded mistakes that lead to goal against especially with the "fancy BS"

But of course that ship has sailed with July 1st and the NTC/NMC now kicked in . Shanahan dropped the ball big time the moment he picked dubas as a gm after doing the right things i.e. scorched earth, and rebuild route.

Would have preferred Leafs get 4 first round picks and marner get an offersheet than what transpired.

Willy can seek that ridiculous AAV on another team. Treliving should be working a trade here. No more Dubas era BS. It is about Toronto Maple Leafs not handful of players that don’t put the team in the back but want to squeeze out every penny

You don't think that the correct way of doing a comparable analysis is to compare the player to the most like players in the NHL? I think we'll all need a moment to let that sink in.

(You also can't just trade him. I mean, you can try, but either the team he's going to needs to know that he will sign there or they have to be willing to take a chance they can convince him. If you don't have that, you won't get value.)

9.5 x 8 years is approx 76 million dollar package for Nylander. If we walk him to the UFA; any team that is willing to offer that to Willy will have a 10.9 approx AAV on a 7 yr deal (max Willy can sign as a UFA with another team in terms of years).

I really don't think anybody in the NHL is going to offer Willy anything more than a 9 AAV at max on a 7 yr deal in the UFA market.

As for Marner; he is already overpaid IMO for what he brings; giving Marner anything more than 11.5 on his next deal for a long term deal is going to be insanity and going to piss me off. I'd rather have Nylander at 9 too than Marner at 12+ AAV that is just absolute madness for a winger who goes into a shell in playoffs
