Cant really the Isles including Nelson in any package deal. If they move him at the deadline, he wouldn't definitely fetch and 1st and pick on his own. No reason so include him in a package with salaries coming back

Grubauer sucks and has sucked for years now. He’s washed up. Varlamov has sucked for 5 games.

This seems bad for the Islanders. If they're trading Brock than Schwartz isn't the target coming back. They should be after something younger. There's no need to take back Grubauer as that doesn't do anything for them going forward.

This clears 1 contract for them, which is 2m buried while not addressing adding to their future.

Yea the only incentive for the Isles would be getting rid of Engvall, not any of the pieces coming back so they say no. The Isles probably trade Nelson separately so they maximize his value, and I think both teams are trying to get younger so I have a hard time seeing that happen.

Yeah getting rid of the Engvall contract seems to be a focal point for the Isles if they were to do this but you yourself mention his buyout is pretty cheap. So why are they paying so much extra for it? They are giving up the best player/asset and taking on the worst contract. For a 2nd round pick.

Isles, if they need to in the off-season should just buyout Envall. Yes, it's like 6 more seasons or whatever at $1 mill dead cap, but there is no reason to use a retention spot for 6 seasons on him.

Nelson, if the Isles are out of it, will be moved along with Palmeri. JGP, Isles should look at retaining to see if they could move off his final year. Lee is also up in 2026.

But, the Isles don't have much in the system to replace these 4 over the next 2 seasons, so they would be dipping back into the FA market as well with the freed up cap space.

Agreed about 6 years on the retention slot. The only retention in this trade is either nobody or 3 years of Grubauer by Seattle, 10% or less.

The buyout cost of Engvall is $1M. There’s zero pressure to make a bad deal just to dump him.

Varlamov looks suddenly old/terrible, but I’m giving him more time.

The Islanders can do much better by just trading Nelson at the deadline.

Engvall buyout expires between 2031 to 2035 depending when you buy out

Grubauer is a 2027 expiry

$1 mill dead cap when the cap will be in the 90’s next season seems like a small price vs given up assets. Especially for a team which in the 2020’s didn’t have much draft capital after dumping Ladd and pushing in for Palmeri and JGP.

Lou is already an expert at handing out horrible contracts which then forces him to overpay to get rid of others to be cap compliant. If he did this deal it would be the worst overpay yet.

Lou should already be let go. I pray that Malkin stops the bleeding from the Isles GM position before Lou goes out and does another trade like this that would set the Isles back even further.

It actually opens up a tiny bit of cap if you waive and demote Engvall or a press box guy. Or demote Wright until injuries or trade deadline. You add $0.35m but then you also remove another player from the roster which will open up more than $0.35m.
