In 2023-24, the Leafs picked up nine regular-season and 7 playoff games of Joel Edmundson for the third-round pick they acquired from the Islanders for Engvall, and Chicago's 2025 fifth-round draft pick.

I think that paltry return was much better than extending him, in view of the deal that Lou was prepared to offer for seven years at $3-million per. Even the one-year $2.25 deal that Engvall had been on at the time of the trade was a bit much.

Looks like Pierre will be a boat anchor for the Isles for quite a while longer -- five and a half years left on that contract, and I doubt that anyone would take it off their hands.

If the Isles buy out the last five years of Engvall's seven-year contract, they'll be paying on it for the next ten years.

I don't know if Lou will even be still aline by then.

He hasn't been good. He sure seemed like a good fit after the trade. A little banged up to start the year last year and he found his way into Roy's doghouse and decided to take up residence there. Not as bad as he has shown but it doesn't matter. No one takes a flyer in his contract.

Did they though? Being a member of other Isles-only boards the signing was pretty hated....couldn't even justify it with "low aav" or "third-liner" money rationale.

I think most Isles fans saw potential with Wahlstrom because his shot is great (he just has a ten cent head) but Engvall....has been "ick" since the beginning.

He was fine in Toronto's bottom Six, his usefulness is as a thirdliner who wins puck races essentially. The issue is you can find a bunch of other fast skaters with a decent wingspan at a better price. Hence why overpaying 3rd liners is a terrible idea.

Imagine being 6 foot 5, blessed with great speed and strength and instead of using it to be a good player, you just play like youre 5’7 and not going to the corners.

God should strip Engvall of his physical attributes he refuses to use and give them to Conor garland. It’s honestly pathetic to watch him play. How can you be so big, strong, fast and soft too? I don’t get these guys who can’t adapt to play middle to bottom 6, especially when they have a toolbox like Pierre.

Nah Mikeyev was legit solid. 2 way speedy goal scorer with decent size and pk ability.

He suffered an ACL injury and hasn’t been the same since.

It makes no sense. If he was actually physical, he would be a beast and a much better player, would make way more money, his team(s) would win more, etc.

The only thing I'll suggest is he's not being used to his strengths . Isles are all about the stretch pass or stretch pass tips into the o-zone then puck pressure . Engvall is good at transporting the puck quickly through sudden openings in the neutral zone leading to some chaos / scoring chances . If Roy's system doesnt offer many of these chances for Pierre to shine then its easy to single him out if he's not hustling to retrieve dump ins.

of course you cannot defend the contract but I'd bet if the Isles didnt sign him he would have received a lot of interest at 3.5-3.75 x some reasonable term elsewhere .

That 10-30 overall range in the 2018 NHL draft was roooough man (aside from Dobson).

Dobson, Farabee, K'Andre Miller, Rasmus Sandin and then a handful of depth guys in Lundestrom, Bernard Docker, Lundqvist, Dellandrea, Kupari and Veleno.

It's not terrible, but definitely not great
