Never forget kids:

Detroit traded down from Jakub Chychrun at 16 to Dennis Cholowski at 20 because they thought Cholowski was the best player in the draft at that point. Even though everyone knew at the time Chychrun wasn’t supposed to slip all the way to 16.

One of the greatest recent draft blunders in history.

Seemed like he was doing decently in a depth role for a month or so there…but after the Isles picked up Adam Boqvist, Scott Perunovich, and Tony DeAngelo in the span of like a week, even with all the injuries, seems the writing was on the wall. It feels like the Isles have about 8-9 bodies for the final 2-3 spots on their blueline when they are more or less healthy.

You could write a book about all of the teams that passed on Jakub Chychrun and the reasons why, ha ha.

They traded down to get rid of the Datsyuk contract.

Was it a bad pick? Sure, most of Holland’s later picks were, but not even close one of the worst ever.

Yeah. There were certainly other factors to that.

You also have to consider that while Chychrun has worked out, there is a laundry list of "fallers" who a team scoops up, is declared a "steal", only to bust because of some of the things that caused other teams to pass on them in the first place.

If anything, it's also a lesson about the even more wildly unpredictable than normal trajectories of second tier/Junior A players out of the draft. Cholowski looked like he had difference-making skating ability and a super high potential ceiling. He just hasn't come anywhere close to it because of other holes in his game. A lot of it being stuff that is just extremely difficult to assess and project accurately against lower quality peers as in his draft year with Chilliwack.

You look at dominant JrA players and...sometimes you get a Makar. Sometimes you get a mid-Fabbro. Sometimes you get a Cholowski or Jost. :dunno: It just adds even more volatility and "range of projection" to an already wildly unpredictable process.

The amazing Ken Holland. He did that to clear cap space so he could sign Frans Nielson to a 6 year 32m contract. Blunder on top of blunder

A blunder? Detroit has Sandin Pellikka because of that trade. We’ll see how Brady Cleveland develops as well, as he’s in the trade tree too. Which we won’t know on him for another 3-4 years.

A blunder is Edmonton trading the Barzal pick with nothing to show for it.

Not sure where you heard that story either but there’s no truth to it at all. They had the same concern others had about Chychrun, but still liked him. Just not more than they liked the trade. I can tell you with 100% certainly though, they did not have Cholowski rated above Chychrun.

Those concerns were why they were ok passing on him though, and also because they received the opportunity they were shopping for that day…. to move Datsyuk’s contract. If Chychrun was still there at 20, they would’ve likely taken him. As they still would’ve, if they didn’t trade the pick to Arizona.

They were trying to dump salary to take a run at Stamkos (who they really thought they had a chance to land) and got another 2nd for dropping the few slots. They drafted Hronek with that extra pick.

So they basically traded Datsyuk’s contract and Chychrun for Hronek and Cholowski.

Now, did they like Cholowski? Sure. Lots of teams did. The question was always going to be, could he ever put on enough strength on that thin frame? Something that still keeps him from being an everyday NHL dman today. He just can’t put any strength on.

They then obviously traded Hronek for the picks that ended up being Sandin-Pellikka, Brady Cleveland and the German kid Bicker. Another extra pick they got for trading down with that 2nd rounder from Vancouver.

In a couple years from now, depending on how ASP turns out, that so-called blunder may turn out to look genius.

"The Bruins could have Barzal, Connor, and Chabot here" tops em all in the last 20ish years imo.

Too long, didn’t read.

You’re just a Detroit fan trying to justify a bad move. A bad move is a bad move bud. Jakob Chychrun is way better than Cholowski.

100%, that’s why u called it an underrated draft blunder,

Yep. Reminds me of when the Flames traded down because they didn't want Martin Brodeur, and knew Trevor Kidd would be available. Whoops.
Except that's not what happened, it was the opposite.

The Flames traded picks 20 (Brodeur), 24 (Harlock) and 29 (Gotziaman) for 11 (Kidd) and 30 (Viitakoski)... Kidd was the clear #1 goalie available in teh draft, it was the Devils who traded down and had a hall of famer fall into their laps

The trade also netted Hronek, so you don’t seem to be listing the complete deal.

Cholowski had a ton of talent, I think we rushed him and he could never seem to survive a robust forecheck. Something you feel like he would overcome over time with his tools but ultimately it relegated him to an AAAA player.
