Hi,

am thinking of buying some new skates but when i try them on i get a numb heel.

does anyone know what causes this and if its likely to stop after i break them in.

the rest of my foot is really comfy.

thanks for any info.

I would guess that you have a large heel and are trying on a skate made for somebody with a narrow or normal heel. You can't punch out composite, which is what most skates are made of these days, so I might try Graf- not only do they make leather boots, but they have different fits to accommodate different foot sizes.

Try on a few other boots first though.

So just numb, not painful or uncomfortable? Pain or discomfort are signs of a bad or improper fit.

Numbness is a result of lack of blood flow which can be caused by lacing/tying a skate too tight. Back off on the laces a bit and see if the numbness persists.

The other thing to do is check to see if the boot is deep enough for your foot. With the skate unlaced and the tongue pulled forward. You should be able to rest a pencil across the tops of the eyelets without it touching your foot. This is referred to as the pencil test.

Baking and wearing a skate will open up the heel pocket. As the skate breaks in the padding in that area will compress a bit. If your heel is too wide for the skate, chances are you wouldn't be able to get it to sit back into the cup properly.
