Great deal, fantastic bottom six player. Big, hits, forechecks, is on the top PK unit in Nashville and can sporadically chip in offensively.

Poster child of a late-blooming, unheralded role player. For $1 million flat over 2 years, that's just great value.

Smith is ok. He gives a consistent effort. Guys like that tend to end up being tweeners once the initial shine wears off, and that is probably still going to happen with Smith eventually, because he doesn't have the skills to carry him beyond any diminishment in his effort level, but for now he's an adequate depth player. I don't think you can really go wrong with a guy who fills his role in the NHL at $1M.

Not my favorite player by any means but he is your prototypical plays hard player. Gives his all every shift. Doesnt always translate to good play but doesnt take a shift off. At a 1M AAV, it is whatever. He can ride in the pressbox, be sent to the AHL, or play on the bottom line. That is good value for good depth.

Can we all just agree now that he's just rated then?
He is indeed rated. :D

I think a lot of people watch NHL player statistics for fantasy hockey purposes, hoping to hit a level of production/Cap ratio that represents reliable bang-for-the-buck on their fantasy rosters. Without necessarily knowing all that much about the players. Smith's 23 pts and some of his advanced stats probably are pretty good for your fantasy 4th line. It doesn't really change the fact that he looks basically borderline for NHL skill. But he hustles and the coaching staff likes him for "intangibles" reasons, so as long as he maintains that, he'll stay "overrated". Then the day he takes his foot off the pedal a little bit he'll vanish into minor league obscurity.

Smith might still be serviceable as a 4th line guy... if you didn't also have McCarron and Jankowski playing every night. And if your team wasn't a bottom-feeder that should be focused instead on trying to develop more talented young players. He has had a brutal start to the season, but the team does have worse players, and several big name stars are even more -ve players on the season so far.

Anyway, when a player like Smith looks bad, I think you don't really blame the player... he is what he is. You blame the coach for using him, or for using him too much, for overlooking his issues, etc. Smith is a lunchpail guy who is a borderline NHLer, and some teams in the league have room for a player like that. Just you have to evaluate if, as a last place team that is struggling to integrate youth into a "retooling" roster, whether he's a fit for your team. Maybe for his off-ice intangibles he IS a fit. But then you have to jettison some other guys who are redundant with him in the lineup. :dunno:

what are your guys thought on him now into this season? I have not watched any NSH games, he safe in NSH?
He's your average high effort, not a lot of results, 4th liner than can PK pretty well because of that, but 5 on 5 that effort gets you dumb penalties. Would be fine if we weren't also playing Jankowski and McCarron.

Hes fine. We are just fielding too much fodder at the moment (Jankowski, McCarron, smith). Take 2 of them out and wed be fine. High effort and motor though and prefer him over the other 2
Im asking cause in my dynasty league Im about to have Jack Hughes and Parker Kelly turn into C's and I only have room for one. so I can either let Kelly rot on my bench and I call up Ivan Ivan since he will become a W now
I was looking at moving Parker Kelly for Cole Smith but wanna make sure Im not acquiring a player who will be out of the lineup by playoff time or my leagues playoff time lol

Assuming Bruno is still behind the bench, Smith could spend his nightly time on ice literally skating around dropping turds on the ice and it probably doesn't affect his minutes. Preds fans hoping that's a big if and Bruno gets shitcanned soon, but signs aren't pointing that way yet. Org seems to love Smith either way though
