Went to see them around lake Louise, Alberta last night and I was pretty disappointed. There was a light show but no colour. We could get colour on our camera though which was weird but couldn't see green with the naked eye. It was my first experience with the northern lights and I was definitely expecting more.

I read up on it though and apparently the naked eye can't really see the lights as well as a camera can.

Been thinking of planning trip next year. Care to share your Iceland experience?

When in Reykjavík and hungry, I highly recommend Grillmarkaðurinn. It's a little pricey, but not too bad, and definitely worth it imo, especially if you like aged steak. "Höfnin veitingarstaður" or, "The Harbor restaurant" is also amazing. It's right on the water, and very nice views. Grab a table outside if the weather allows for it. You don't be disappointed. May I recommend the Reindeer :)

I can't find a website for it, but K-Bar is a really posh spot as well for drinks and food.

Other than food, let me know some of your interests, and I can better suggest tourist stuff to check out.

My Grandfather is from Ãsafjörður, I go there mostly when I go to Iceland. Small town on the western peninsula, but there's stuff to do, and the scenery is stunning.

Lastly, may I highly recommend you check out the Dimmu Borgir, or Black Citadels (yes, the band is named after it )

It's Iceland's version of the Bermuda Triangle. Supposedly haunted and apparently people go missing there. It's a large area of weird fields of lava formations. Looks like it's from another world. It's east of Mývatn in the north central part of the country, the lake itself is gorgeous as well, and it's close to Krafla volcano, both of which are worth checking out if you can, but the Dimmuborgir itself is jaw dropping.

beautiful!

Is 'northern lights' just a Canadian expression? What do people call it elsewhere - aurora borealis?

"Fox's fires" in Finnish. Apparently the Sami explanation for them happening was that a fox is whiffing the snow cover with its tail.
