So having the opinion that The North was the weaker division last year makes you a Leaf hating troll like some on here are suggesting? Cool!
Well, if you use the standings (what seed the team was at) from the previous season, then yes the North Division teams were not that strong for sure. Seems odd to see stats guys shy away from stats. Oh well.So does this means the North was actually weak? I recall earlier this season it was posted that their good records meant it was actually a strong division.
.......or get beat up by.The strength of the North Division doesn’t matter. You can only punch down on whomever the league puts in front of you.
A perusal at the standings at roughly the midpoint of the season shows that only the Leafs and Flames are in a playoff position. Ottawa Montreal Winnipeg have little reasonable chance at getting in and Edmonton and Vancouver are going to be in tough. Last year there were conflicting views on the strength of the North and how the Leafs’ first place finish meant little in assessing how good they were.
I contend regardless of where North teams are this year and level of competition, this year’s Leafs team belongs among the best in the league. But it’s interesting to note the struggles the other teams have had against the rest of the league.

Yeah, the Pacific division is trash. The worst in the league.I mean literally the entire Pacific Division would be outside of the Eastern Conference playoffs right now by points percentage.
The Leafs were handed a gift as were the other CDN teams with 4 guaranteed spots out of 7 teams in the playoffs and a final 4 appearance for 1.
All the Leafs had to do was beat Montreal the #18th ranked team and then EDM/WIN (all non playoff teams this year) in what should have been Leafs best chance to appear in the final 4 in 2 decades.
What a wasted opportunity, and now we go from the weakest North Div to likely the strongest Atlantic having to go through Florida and Tampa Bay and then Carolina all teams punching above Leafs current weight class.
AgreedOne thing that's not surprising is that the Leafs were the best team in the division - which is why they won it. And why they're the main team from it to be comfortably in a playoff spot now.
The fact that the Habs/Jets/Oilers have fell off this year has no barring on how good the Leafs should be viewed as
Reminder: They sucked then, they suck now.Remember all those threads talking about how awful the West division was with 5 of the bottom 11 teams from the previous season taking part in it?
Neither do I.....
Why would Leaf fans create threads about the West? I'm sure like me no one cares about it.Remember all those threads talking about how awful the West division was with 5 of the bottom 11 teams from the previous season taking part in it?

That depends. Did you use the "weak north" argument convince yourself or others that the Leafs weren't actually that good?
Then yes.
whoa he didn't say anything to deserve hate like this. I signed up here in summer (well lurk/sign). 90% of posts were toxic Leafs hate up until about November. Pretty sure he's referring to that time period.FFS , it is opinion, not some dumb argument. Why would a Leaf fan try to convince themselves or others the Leafs weren't that good? Not all opinions are anti Leaf Zeke. Your inferiority complex is over the top man.
