So having the opinion that The North was the weaker division last year makes you a Leaf hating troll like some on here are suggesting? Cool!

So does this means the North was actually weak? I recall earlier this season it was posted that their good records meant it was actually a strong division.
Well, if you use the standings (what seed the team was at) from the previous season, then yes the North Division teams were not that strong for sure. Seems odd to see stats guys shy away from stats. Oh well.

The strength of the North Division doesn’t matter. You can only punch down on whomever the league puts in front of you.

The North isn't that far off where I would have guessed preseason, so really it's tough to be overly critical.

Toronto, Edmonton, Vancouver, and Montreal are about where I expected

Winnipeg and Ottawa are worse than I expected and Calgary is better than I expected

And to be fair Winnipeg and Ottawa are both in extremely tough divisions

A perusal at the standings at roughly the midpoint of the season shows that only the Leafs and Flames are in a playoff position. Ottawa Montreal Winnipeg have little reasonable chance at getting in and Edmonton and Vancouver are going to be in tough. Last year there were conflicting views on the strength of the North and how the Leafs’ first place finish meant little in assessing how good they were.

I contend regardless of where North teams are this year and level of competition, this year’s Leafs team belongs among the best in the league. But it’s interesting to note the struggles the other teams have had against the rest of the league.

Edmonton has quite a few games in hand and are not in as tough as it appears.

Calgary will most likely be there.

Canucks are in tough and this next 5 game stretch for them will probably determine the aeason.

I'm not sure anyone predicted Montreal to fall this far but many of us were thinking that they weren't built to win in the regular season going forward. Ottawa doesn't want to win so they aren't. It's amazing how much decently positioned teams like all of Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg continue to fall short of regular season expectations. Yes, I include Calgary.

.......or get beat up by.

The Leafs were handed a gift as were the other CDN teams with 4 guaranteed spots out of 7 teams in the playoffs and a final 4 appearance for 1.

All the Leafs had to do was beat Montreal the #18th ranked team and then EDM/WIN (all non playoff teams this year) in what should have been Leafs best chance to appear in the final 4 in 2 decades.

What a wasted opportunity, and now we go from the weakest North Div to likely the strongest Atlantic having to go through Florida and Tampa Bay and then Carolina all teams punching above Leafs current weight class.

That depends. Did you use the "weak north" argument convince yourself or others that the Leafs weren't actually that good?

Then yes.

With half a season and 7 games in hand it's premature to say Edmonton is not in the playoffs.

That being said. No doubt the road to the Cup is much tougher this year.

One thing that's not surprising is that the Leafs were the best team in the division - which is why they won it. And why they're the main team from it to be comfortably in a playoff spot now.

The fact that the Habs/Jets/Oilers have fell off this year has no barring on how good the Leafs should be viewed as

Agreed

The Leafs were the best of the CDN teams in the shortened regular season, and the standings confirm that.

Then they lost to the 4th place team in the Div including blowing 3-1 games series collapse to a team with the worst regular season record of all the 16 playoff teams.

The strength of the CDN Div was subjective, the results however were not.

A team should always be judged on the merits of their own performance.

Doesn't matter. You still need to be elite to stomp an entire NHL division. This isn't house league. 1-4 players separate the worst team from the best team max. That being team 32 to team 1.

Remember all those threads talking about how awful the West division was with 5 of the bottom 11 teams from the previous season taking part in it?

Neither do I.....

Reminder: They sucked then, they suck now.

If the playoffs were to begin today, 7 of the top 10 teams are from the east and the bottom 4 are from the West.

Why would Leaf fans create threads about the West? I'm sure like me no one cares about it.

Why would a thread about last year's North division be in a 2022 Leaf thread? I know you would get more views here but there are mainboards for the riff raff.

Anyone talking about weak or strong divisions would obviously have to look at all the divisions to make the judgement.

FFS , it is opinion, not some dumb argument. Why would a Leaf fan try to convince themselves or others the Leafs weren't that good? Not all opinions are anti Leaf Zeke. Your inferiority complex is over the top man.

whoa he didn't say anything to deserve hate like this. I signed up here in summer (well lurk/sign). 90% of posts were toxic Leafs hate up until about November. Pretty sure he's referring to that time period.

This place being quiet and calm is a new experience for me actually. 80% of my stay was during the post-habs apocalypse :help:
