They weren't needed for the year that the ECHL didn't play, I think...
Which year was that?

Most NHL teams will always need ECHL teams because that's where their low draft picks/UDFAs go when there's no room in the AHL for them.

And f*** this "Norfolk" Admirals shit, they will always be the Hampton Roads Admirals, especially as long as they play in the ECHL.

Last year, I guess? I seem to recall that the ECHL cancelled the end of the 2019-2020 season and the entirety of the 2020-2021 season, but I'm uncertain and too lazy to look it up, lol

Huh. I always thought Norfolk was an AHL team. For the Perds or something.

Ah well. Good to expand the prospect graveyard.

They were the AHL team for the Lightning until 2012 I think. I'm not sure why they they had to downgrade to the ECHL, but when the Checkers came back to the Eastern Conference it took away their one close opponent.

I believe it was the Western expansion of the AHL that did Norfolk in.

Correct. The AHL Norfolk Admirals were purchased in 2015 by the Ducks, who'd they been affiliated with since 2012, for relocation to become the current iteration of the San Diego Gulls as part of the AHL's West Coast expansion. Along with that expansion came the Bakersfield Condors moving up from the ECHL to the AHL as well and the Oilers, who owned the Condors at the time, relocated the ECHL franchise to Norfolk.
