When will Russia be allowed to return? I'd like to think they'll be there this December, no? Can't see the IIHF just kind of arbitrarily forcing a great hockey nation to sit on the sidelines for multiple tournaments, but I guess you never know these days.

What is the "goal post" for Russia to return? No war?

No Russia in December. There's no relegation in this tournament, so it will be the same teams in December. There will be relegation in that one, so I expect Russia will be back in the 2024 tournament.

The 2024 format should be known by the time the 2023 tournament takes place which is just a few months from now, so needless to discuss anything before 2025 and even for that a lot would have to happen. Nothing is happening.

This war is horrible, but sports should not be affected by it, the athletes should not suffer as they didn’t commit any crimes other than being Russian

They remain free to represent any country they are eligible to play for, even acquire a new nationality if they so wish. As we saw with Team China, the IIHF is willing to consider applications even when the normal eligibility requirements aren't fulfilled.

There's a whole lot of fuss for a national team that doesn't win a whole lot. not much of anything for 30 years or so.

I can't believe anyone would be unaware enough to think that Russia will be back in the WJC this December.

Part of the goal is to deprive Putin of the prestige of international competition and success there. And we know her personally holds hockey in high esteem. They won’t let them back until the situation normalizes.
