CapWages has the Devils as being 163K under the cap, so there might be some salary cap considerations? A player on a conditioning loan still counts against the cap which I didn't know until I looked it up now.

Hatakka is on SOIR with a cap hit of $161k. If NJ activates him off IR then his cap hit returns to $775k, consuming another $614k non pro-rated of cap space.

Hasn't played all year so Devils probably figure nobody will claim him. Allows him to play for Utica. Both the AHL and NHL club are short on defensemen due to injury.

Makes no sense - should've given him a few games in Utica and then kept him up as the 7th defenseman.

I mean, his being waived now is effectively the first step of this isn’t it? He can’t play in Utica unless he clears waivers or goes on conditioning assignment.

A player can’t be sent on conditioning loan unless he consents. I wonder if he was asked and declined consent (thinking he’d rather see if another team wants to keep him in the nhl than stay with this franchise that’s so deep at D he’s watched Nemec be in the minors most of the year, and sees the writing on the wall that he’s #9 in a healthy version of this org at best and hopes some other team would slot him higher in theirs)

So sending him to the farm team….well.
