To NJD : Dominik Kubalik

To CHI : Janne Kuokannen + Oliers 2022 4th round pick

A change of scenery deal for 2 struggling players. Devils do this because they need someone who can score goals to play with Hughes. Kubalik is good at that when he is on his game. Tatar isn't the answer this year playing mainly 3rd line minutes while Sharanogivch has been struggling to take a step forward and building off his rookie year. We have Holtz on the way but he needs to develop more in the AHL. Blackhawks do this trade to get a young , cheap player who can play middle 6 minutes. Kuokannen is only 23 and fits in with the Blackhawks inevitable rebuild. He still has some potential to be a half a point per game player who can play all 3 FWD positions. He is on a cheap deal and will be an RFA still after it expires. Can be flipped at the deadline this year or even next for more if he has a good year. Could be moving Kubalik for a 4th and potentially 3rd next year as many teams overpay at deadlines.

Wouldn't mind moving Kubalik. Not sure if the late 4th is enough to bridge the gap, but Kubalik has struggled this year so I wouldn't hate it at this current value, either.

Is Boqvist an option as well to Chi? He is a C so it may be more worthwhile to Chi. He is finally getting more time but a similar player to JK. Chi had his brother Adam before the Jones trade. Just a thought

I’m not sure I want to give up on Kuokkanen yet. He played very well last year with Hughes. Seems to be in a funk this year. Decent vision and willing to play whatever style you ask of him.
However , the Devils do have a massive need for a scoring winger . I guess the Decils have more prospects like Kukkonen and no shoot first wingers (except maybe Foote and of course Holtz) .
I’d be willing to up the offer slightly on the Devils end. Boqvist or Kuokkanen plus maybe our own 3rd

Dont forget about Clarke. He has a really food shot too. Samu Salminen is a scorer as well

Not really that appealing for Hawks

Surely, they can get better then a struggling player whose upside in best case scenario is of a 3rd liner and a mid round pick

Hawks need higher quality young talent to come from any potential Kubalik deal as Hawks pipeline is pretty empty of quality especially kids who can score

We have guys like Kurashev , Entwistle , etc for bottom 6 roles going forward who have 3rd liner skillset/upside as Kuokannen. What Hawks dont have is young guys with top 6 potential

Also given Hawks cap going forward including $21M coming off cap in offseason of 2023 when Kane/Toews deals expire the "Cheap talent" argument isn't needed for Chicago

We needed cheap talent during contending years but now it's not of great importance in rebuild

Is Boqvist an option as well to Chi? He is a C so it may be more worthwhile to Chi. He is finally getting more time but a similar player to JK. Chi had his brother Adam before the Jones trade. Just a thought

Boqvist has been unable to nail down spot with Devils and hasn't shown himself to be anything special at this point

Not sure what appeal he has to anyone in trade right now outside of being a throw in

Kubalik has scored 30 goals in 68 games before and is 26, I doubt this is enough to get him.
Ok , he is having back to back down years. His value is low and he is due for a contract soon. I guess it's better for the Hawks to overpay for him to keep him or them to move him at the deadline for a 2nd round pick at best...

I don't see how Chicago would consider trading one struggling player for a lesser struggling player
