Trade is one for one

zacha for vitek vanecek

devils need goaltending addressed, they can fix their offense via free agency, goalie depth is nonexistent at an NHL level

Caps Able to add great depth for the playoffs

thoughts?

Bold strategy with Bernier coming off hip surgery going into his age 34 season. I'm not sure I'm there with you.

I think it's probably a good idea to have a backup plan for that.
My thoughts exactly, if bernier goes down (or Blackwood) we are in the same boat…schmid and daws are a long way out for being a reliable backup.

it may “seem” like an overpayment for the devils but that’s the cost of reliable goaltending

I won't address the trade value, but it should probably be explicitly stated that the Caps will only deal one of their goalies if they acquire a surefire starter better than Vanecek or Samsonov in another deal.

This Devils fan declines.

This season is lost, and I have faith in the Blackwood Bernier tandem for next season.

Is Bernier supposed to be healthy? I think it would be hard to rely on an aging guy coming off surgery to be reliable for a tandem role.

The Devils are very likely going to need to find another goalie this offseason.

100%. Can't even rely on Blackwood who has been fairly bad outside of a couple of stretches. There's no reason that the Devils should be going into next year with these same two guys.

Hard to fault Fitz, because he's made some solid moves (on paper) to address the goaltending with Crawford and Bernier, it's just really unfortunate how they turned out.

IMO he really should be looking at a complete reset in goal next season. The Canes weren't afraid to do it.

I think Devils have to consider this. The big issue is next year the Devils have Blackwood signed at 2.8. Bernier, coming off hip injury, signed at 4.125. Best case scenario for the Devils is Bernier calls it quits. But if he wants to play next year, the Devils have to hope he rebounds from hip surgery, which historically doesn’t go well for older goalies.

Fitzgerald would likely love to carry three goalies the way the last two years went, but I’m not sure that’s feasible. If I’m Vanecek, it’s not really a situation I want to be in either.

Sounds great in theory. A lot harder to do when both goalies are signed through next year and coming off injury troubles.

Zacha is a fine player, but I dont think he is at all what the Caps need. Even if the value on the OP is definately not bad for us.

Caps dont need a luxury middle-six guy (no offence on Zacha), but a legit top6 thread. And they dont need a center, but a winger. Zacha as RFA will also demand a raise which doesnt fit very well for the Caps for what his role would be (a third line offence booster?).

Hey, if Vancouver is interested in Zacha, maybe build up a 3-way deal where Caps target Miller or Boeser :)

Canucks gets Zacha + Caps 1st + ?
Devils get Vanecek or Samsonov*
Caps gets Miller or Boeser

*trade only goes through if Caps acquire another nr1 goalie first.

Zacha is really not a center. He can play center but he looks much better on the wing.

Zacha is frustrating to watch because the tools are there. He is definitely in the mold of a Killorn/Zubrus type player where they’re versatile in their roles. They can play in any situation — PP, PK, 4-on-4, 3-on-3, checking line, scoring line, etc. — although they’re never your first option. They can dominate shifts with their size/skill when they want to, but over the course of a full season, 85-90% of the time, you’re frustrated by the effort.

He’s developed into a good utility forward, enough skill to put up 60 points in a season, but likely hovers around 40.

Those deals are tempting for the Devils, but cant see three goalies ever going well.

If thats the tandem we roll with next year then ill see you at the 2023 draft when we are picking top 5 again. Bernier is coming off a serious hip injury & we all know what happens when an older goalie gets one. Its the kiss of death. Blackwood also has his own injury problems. Not only that but hes completely inconsistent & lets in tons of softys. Neither are a 1A next year and in the current state neither are even 1Bs. We must get a new starter for next year or its another lost season.
