Detroit and Kronwall just announced that his injury (which held him out all season) wont be 100% ready in order to play in the olympics. It was just reported by the swedish newspapers.

This is our current crop of defensemen:

Lidstrom (red wings)
Norstrom (kings)
Kenny Jonsson (sweden)
Ohlund (canucks)
Havelid (thrashers)
Backman (blues)

We need to pick a back up a 7th defenseman, and we don't have a lot of choices. (Thanks to BÃ…G again)

Even if Tarnstrom been bad this season, I'd say pick him for the experience in NHL.

BÃ…G:s scouting abilities is clearly less than optimal - he didn't even know that Doug Murray was Swedish. :biglaugh:

Back to the topic - I'd say go with Tjärnqvist. He is less of a defensive liability than Tärnström.

What this really means is that our top d-men will have a lot of work to do in Turin. It's really thinning out.

One more injury on the defensemen and We're in big trouble.

We can clearly not afford to lose one more of the original seven. And our gameplan now has to be to play our top two pairs a lot. I don't expect to see much of Hävelid and whoever replaces Kronwall in the knockout stage.

Still one of the best top 4s in the tournament, right up there with Canada. Lidstrom and Ohlund are two of the best on the planet. Norstrom and Kenny Jonsson never get the credit they deserve. The 5-7 aren't as strong as Canada, but 1-7, I'd still rate Sweden as No. 2 in the tournament.

Not so much to choose from, it's either Tjärnqvist or Tärnström. I'd go with Tjärnqvist at this moment, he's injuried at the moment but have played better lately.

To bad Henrik Tallinder isn't avaliable.

his injury has pushed him further under the radar. I think he still has the potential to be an elite #1.

Too bad Henrik's suspended.... He's improved a LOT. A top-2 defenseman on the Sabres this season, the last 15 games or so, teh clear cut best defenseman.

I'm still a bit suspicious about Kenny Jonsson. Is he ready to go against olympic competition after playing with Rogle a year and a half?
Also, from what I've read, he's played fairly mediocre in Euro Hockey Tour games. :dunno:

losing Kronvall hurts a lot.The original defense(which i thought was on par with any team in the tourney) is thinning out with his and Johnssons departure.Hmm........ :dunno:

Actually he was a standout in his last EHT-tournament.

Our defence went from really good to just okay with Jonsson and Kronwall not making it. I don't think I've ever seen such a defensive play as the way Kronwall played in the last worlds, he was simply that amazing.

If I needed to pick a defencemen from the SEL I would go with Timander. He has got the offensive play, he always makes it simple and is superb in the defence. I've never seen him as good as he currently is. He should be playing the Worlds atleast.
