Player Discussion Nikita Nesterenko

Fluid skater, good vision, goes to the right place on the ice when he should. Appears to be a good passer, shot hasn’t been poor but doesn’t seem special either.

Needs some meat on his bones and will likely never be terribly successful without skilled players to play with. Not star level players, just players who aren’t our 4th line.

I think that him getting playing time over the current 4th line isn’t unfair to the current 4th line.

I noticed him on the boards battling for a puck and didn’t look too weak, lost the puck battle but it wasn’t like he didn’t have a chance.

I would like to see him with Zegras and Terry. Saw that combo a bit last night and it looked good. I’m getting tired of Stroke with Z.

What's stood out to me is his play after losing puck battles along the boards in the defensive zone. He keeps his stick active, moves his feet, and pressures the puck.

I don't know if that necessarily adheres to the defensive scheme Eakins has implemented, but I think it's more effective than sagging back deeper into the zone like most of our forwards do in that scenario.

Our guys are so bad with those puck battles and it’s not even a contest. It’s one of the reasons we are here. If we have guys strong on the puck able to win those battles in both ends , we would see better results on the scoresheet. That to me stood out the most was his ability to battle and not be overwhelmed.

Jones has been doing that and he is finally getting more on the scoresheet and on this team it’s remarkable.

Question is is he already a better prospect than perrault or Tracey?

Agreed. I look at it kinda like Terry last year vs Terry this year. He’s clearly stronger, and it lets him be more effective in puck battles, but it’s not like he was bad last year.

He's working hard and shows a fair bit of jump. Most likely just positive traits he possesses but also possibly somewhat more noticeable at a time of year where a lot of our guys look fairly worn down. The college season definitely isn't the same grind compared to what the rest of the roster has faced.

Not to take anything away from him though. Seems pretty smart and bought into a team first mentality. Will need to get stronger but I think he could be a really useful support player.

I'll gladly eat crow on the Klingberg deal, thought we just got a later pick and a throw in but it would appear he's a legitimate NHL prospect who can win a roster job moving forward. Any time you can get that out of moving a rental (who isn't a superstar) I think you've done pretty well.

I haven't been able to focus on the past two games like I usually do, but have been watching passively. What I do notice about Nesterenko over our other players is that he's a faster skater. Maybe he's got that quicker, stronger burst, but I see he's a faster skater than most of our team. It's his skating that's making him stand out more b/c he can go to the right place often and causes the opponent to back off some for fear of getting beat.

We'll probably get to see him play the rest of the season up in the NHL as we're probably looking for bottom-6 replacements for next season.

I think its good hes getting NHL time. You would hope that will allow him to learn what he needs to focus on in the offseason to prepare himself better for the league. Also gives the coaching staff time to actually see the kid and give hi some notes. Overall he hasnt looked out of place and had some good opportunities.

He has been fine/nice when I saw him (gotta remember he's put with defensively sound Lundy and Silf to make it easier on him).

But Regenda gotta be looking at his situation like:

What everyone else has said but I’ll add he panics with the puck, which is normal for someone that isn’t special transitioning from college to the NHL. For example, him whipping the puck to a vacant point and all the way down the ice last night.

He needs some confidence to make good plays with the puck, which is why he should be in the AHL for a bit.

Nesty looked pretty nice in my limited viewing of the game. Does seem to have some potential, he immediately becomes one of our top F prospects lol.

But also, oh my that dish from McTavish (McDish?)

McTadish... McT'dish.... Hmmm, Mac Da-Dish. I don't know man, but I think it's there somewhere

Definitely some skill there. REALLY REALLY hard to evaluate anyone on this terrible team though

All our forwards are going to be handicapped with how bad our D is.

I’ve seen him now 2 games in person. Looks very promising and think we may get a good middle six forward. May even have Top 6 potential.
