Mighty Ducks of Anaheim defenceman Scott Niedermayer has informed Hockey Canada that he will not be playing for Canada at the 2006 Winter Olympic Games in Torino
Sportsnet has learned Anaheim's Scott Niedermayer will have surgery on Monday
Macman said:Ouch, that hurts. Bouwmeester will probably get the nod now, though I wouldn't mind seeing Phaneuf in there.
RangerBoy said:Niedermayer made the correct decision. The Ducks made a huge financial committment to Niedermayer and they have a chance to make the playoffs.Have the knee scoped, rehab the knee during the Olympics and return to the ice with the knee healthy for the playoff run.Good for him

OilerOlli said:That's hard for Canda. They don't have so much great D's anymore.
Would had been easier for them to fill a new spot for a top forward in their roster...
I feel bad for him, whenever he was asked about the Olympics he got excited, but I think winning a gold in 2002 made the decision easier...now another guy get's a chance. He's played great this year, Canada's D has some big names but some of them are struggling(Foote and Blake)RangerBoy said:Niedermayer made the correct decision. The Ducks made a huge financial committment to Niedermayer and they have a chance to make the playoffs.Have the knee scoped, rehab the knee during the Olympics and return to the ice with the knee healthy for the playoff run.Good for him

So does this all but assure McCabe on the blueline?

Bryan McCabe - Toronto Maple Leafs
Jay Bouwmeester - Florida Panthers
Dan Boyle - Tampa Bay Lightning
Dion Phaneuf - Calgary Flames
Scott Hannan - San Jose Sharks
Chris Phillips - Ottawa Senators

Kevin Forbes said:obviously not, that's why they weren't named to the team originally. Quite simply, you can't replace a healthy Scott Niedermayer with anyone not already on the team. Team Canada will be a weaker team without Niedermayer in the lineup (well arguably, we'll never know what a hurting Niedermayer would contribute), but even with Jovo and Nieds out, Team Canada's top six stacks up quite nicely against any other country.

Jovo has been playing horrible all year so he isn't a big loss. Not having Niedermeyer will hurt but he can be replaced.Ovechkin_mvp said:These guys are ok, but nowhere near Jovanovksy/ Niedermier caliber
