Well, here we go, we can have a thread about this. In summary, Nicolas Roy delivered a cross check to Trent Frederic last night during the first (and only) overtime period. He was assessed a five-minute major plus game misconduct for the cross check to Trent Frederic's face. Frederic went to the dressing room, but returned to the game and played a shift.

Here's a video I found of the cross check:

You can see to what Nic was reacting to. Frederic puts his hands on his stick and his right arm goes up a bit like he was going to be throwing a cross check himself but he stops the motion. The slow mo shows it pretty well, the puck pops up in the air and Frederic was reacting to that, he makes a little move towards the puck with his arms but stops and Roy throws a reactionary cross check to protect himself from what he thought was coming. No problem at all if he sits the next game but as with DOPS we'll see where the blind dart throw lands.

1 or 2 games. The oiler guy was going to do the samething till he realized he may hit the other guy in the face

Rule 1. You are responsible for what your stick does

As an Oilers fan I think 1 game would be fair.

I honestly don't think he was looking to injure Frederic on the play. At the same time you can't let players get away with crosschecking each other in the face.

This would be an easy 2-3+ game suspension in the regular season.

Your last sentence reminds me of that website where you could spin the NHL "wheel of justice" (the site is unfortunately gone now). You could toggle a slider to indicate that it's the playoffs, which would give you a message of "Shea Weber mode activated!" That would lower the number of games on the wheel, then once you spun it, it included the explanatory phrase, "this is the playoffs and that should be enough."

A couple other fun phrases from that website depending on who you picked for the hypothetical incidents (with my own random examples in there):

"In making this decision, we also took into account that Raffi Torres is a goon."
"In making this decision, we also took into account that Sidney Crosby is a superstar."

I may not have the quotes exactly verbatim, but you get the idea.

I think it will probably be one game because it wasn't obviously retaliatory for anything specific, but I still have no idea what he was thinking. Yes the puck got flipped up, but it doesn't look like he was trying to play the puck. Frederic thoughts about it for a second, minor flinch, but then realized that would be stupid, dangerous and counter-productive. I guess that minor flinch by Frederic somehow motivated Roy to cross-check him in the face???

I honestly dont know what he was thinking. Cross check at the puck? What awful aim and reasoning that would be. No idea why he would intentially cross check him in the face, but thats what he did.

Pretty similar to what Benn did against Mark Stone back in the 2023 WCF. He got 3 games despite the stakes and having no suspension history. That was also early in game 3 and he also received a 5 minute major and game misconduct, so it functioned like a 4 game suspension.

Based on that, at least 2-3 games seems reasonable here. Less intent by Roy relative to Benn's hit, but still a nasty and completely unnecessary play.

"I'm gonna show that puck who's boss....ooops.....shit....missed."
