2.5MM elephant in the room

I think we've got substantially bigger elephants

Take it to the main boards. I'm sure many non-leaf fans would love to discuss those bigger elephants. Do people on the main boards cheer for salaries and not teams/players? Maybe they do. Perhaps they will enlighten you as to what the 'elephant in the room' phrase means.

I'm deeming Ritchie to be that because I wasn't all the impressed with his pre-season/1st two games. I am not afraid to comment on him this early. You can see how every new leaf is doing. You don't need 15 games to comment on Kampf. We pretty much know what he is. Same goes for Kase, Liljegren, Mrazek, Bunting, etc.

I also don't pride myself in convicting leafs. I want all of them to do well. If they have more potential then I want to see it. Can they help TOR? GREAT! Are they struggling? Let's hope for not long.

great ! Now we have Elephants and Giraffes, argh!

If you have Cap Space maybe you get a better middle 6 player.

Honestly, you don't need a top 3 * 6 player for the top line, if you get a good skating player who plays a role.
At this point Ritchie isn't playing a complementary role perhaps because his line has been ineffective offensively.
His line is more an extremely overpaid time placeholder.
Yeah, there’s several different configurations that could work, but for me, none include $11M to a flawed winger and $11M to your #2 centre… This would result in short cuts and bargain purchases for other important roles and that’s not a recipe for success.

Don't care enough to do that

If Ritchie is an elephant then Tavares and Marner are whales

Perhaps no one is freaking out over Ritchie because it has been 3 games and he's paid 2.5MM and they are able to put things in perspective. Just a thought.

It's a real pickle. Allocating so much to 4 forwards always leaves Dubas selecting from the fringes. Those fringe players are just hopefuls. Are we asking too much of a 2.5 million dollar player? Yes we probably are. What can this team do? We have to ask our our 2.5 million dollar player to play like a 6 million dollar player. Yes Matthews is one of the best players in the league. Nylander seems to be performing quite well. Ideally it would be nice just to pay those two and that it's. No we can't. TOR is committed to Tavares (11M) who is slowing and producing like a 2nd line C. Also Marner who produces but is paid 10.9M. Clearly the 22M can be allocated better, but no. We are going circles expecting a lot of Ritchie, Bunting, etc. Wash, rinse, and repeat.

Whales and Elephants size comparisons. Got it. A whale is bigger than an elephant. Ok.

Yes, I always look to the main boards for unbiased, level headed and knowledgeable validation of all things Leaf related……

For $2.5m, anyone who creates on ice presence and makes anyone think twice about touching Matthews, who can skate, can a lot in our top 9, and is good for at least 5-10 goals is worth it to me.

We have bigger issues than this.

I don't disagree with your opinion, but Holy God! We are lowering the bar to compare him to Vesey? I know it's early, but we need more from him. Perhaps it's unrealistic, but Vesey is a struggling NHLer/waiver fodder. For the sake of the team and jobs being on the line I just can't see Ritchie helping TOR succeed.
Here's why I make the comparison to Vesey:
Last year after watching one pre-season game I posted that Vesey and Lehtonen weren't cut out for the NHL (Lehtonen had two points in that game and naturally everyone disagreed except you were the one person who liked my post [yes I have a memory that is very good at remembering absolutely pointless details]). This is not the same situation, Ritchie has skills to offer and it's why I'm not against him having a longer least as opposed to Vesey who I wanted waived after 5 games. I agree that it would be nice to see him play better, but if anyone is expecting his skating to be better that's on them, that will never be a strength of his game. And sometimes bad skating can look like a lack of effort. I think though if you went back and rewatched last game and only focus on Ritchie you'll see he had a strong game, he was more in tune with the flow of the play in the neutral and d-zone, made some great plays in the cycle, and as I said I like how his hits are HEAVY, it's a nice new element to the team.

Now, if he can't bring that level of game consistently then he's going to get dropped down the line up, I'm not saying he should be a lock on that first line. But I'm willing to give him 15-20 games to make a case

I'm predicting Ritchie gets traded halfway through the season.

Marner was already looking off Ritchie for another option last night, which is astounding for a pass first player.

Um, on that play, Marner had a choice; he could try to get it to Richie, which required him to pass through 2 Senator defensemen, or he could pass to a wide open Tavares. So why are you acting like that means Richie isn't a viable option, ever? On that play, he clearly wasn't.

Ah, Ye Olde "let's talk about the one UFA that hasn't looked good so far" Thread.

It's 3 games in we are 2-1 let's wait for at least 10 games in before we hang the guy

Liljegren and the praise he's getting from fans is based on 1 game and the pre-season. That's fine. Let the fans be to praise him. Let's give Ritchie detractors the same privilege though. No one is saying "hang him!". We only want Ritchie to be better, to be more noticeable in the game, and help TOR win. I really don't think 10-15 games will make a difference.

That's my point lol so much overreacting from one game to next give them both more time

Um, Marner makes that pass all the time.

Haven't noticed any glaring mistakes, haven't noticed any strong plays.

Haven't really noticed him much at all.
