2. Two games. Scored fine in preseason. He does not have Kapanen speed, he doesn’t have Hyman hustle. I’m going wait to see what he brings that’s unique. Probably our best net front option, had some looks the first game, the whole team looked groggy in the second game.

if ritchie wasnt a lazy player who disappeared for large chunks of games you think his skill and size would have only gotten 2.5 on the market? fact is leafs need a guy like him but cant afford the better versions of him whether it be trade or signing.
good post and if he consistently played with energy Bos would have qualified him and he wouldn't have hit the open market , hell he would have never been moved from the Ducks

but i did find the excuse being floated on this board about how Boston didn't qualify him because they were afraid he'd get a massive arb award creative

Is this the part where fans complain about players that are “add ons” to this Dubas’ roster?

Ritchie is one of 8 forwards on this team that account for <3% of the cap each.

You get what you build and what you can afford.

He's been underwhelming so far, but so have Marner and JT.

I will give Ritchie the benefit of the doubt until he gets a chance to settle in with Matthews and Marner for a few games.

Nick Ritchie may have his own history and baggage as a big power forward who hasn't always brought it, but as a newcomer and a $2.5 million salary, he's definitely not "the problem." I'd say the elephant in the room is most definitely the two guys you cited and probably more so Tavares than Marner.

Only 2 games, but between our two returning hometown heroes 91 and 19 , who would you say has captured fan support and visibly energized the team every time they're on the ice and led by example as a veteran you can set the clock by (going back to at least last season)? The fact that it can be this close at their salaries and the eye test on a nightly basis is just not ideal.

He's playing the way he usually plays. He'll have some really good games but there will be more of these lower impact games than high impact games. There is a reason we didn't have to pay him an arm and a leg and it's the same reason i'm glad we didn't go too long on term.

This is now the most useless thread on HF. Mods, why are we constantly subjected to this???

There's varied opinions in this thread about Ritchie which is a good thing. It's called a discussion or sometimes a debate. It's usually encouraged in a hockey discussion site.

Other people only want to talk about how to possibly gang up on people.

If you don't want to talk about Ritchie why come here?

Seriously half this fanbase needs to take a step back off the ledge. There are 80 more games to go and some people are ready to end it all after 1 lose. Spoiler alert...we are going to lose more games this season. It will be okay.
leafs fans on a typical night after a bad game...

He’s come exactly as advertised. If you thought he was a Hyman caliber player, that’s your fault.

He’ll have games where he physically takes over, but for the most part, he’s a passive cerebral player with net front ability and the occasional fight. He’ll pot 15-20 goals with a bottom six impact otherwise.

JT looks like he is skating in sand this year. I know we all expected a drop off as he ages...but my word...this guy is tugboat slow when he chugs around the ice. That's why when people refer to him as being a good shutdown player I laugh...he must be neck and neck with Sandin for slowest player on the team.

It’s more the crowd that can’t even acknowledge that Hyman is a key loss that isn’t easily replaceable.

Tavares was red hot down the stretch and all of his early season issues seemed to go away last season, so I'm reasonably satisfied that we aren't seeing a slow and irreversible decline from him.

But the question remains, why does a guy for a workmanlike lead by example guy have such high highs and low lows throughout a season in terms of 5 on 5, shift to shift play? It'll all even out on the stats line over 82 games but I'd rather just have the 1 point every night from him and a reasonably similar level of impact on a nightly basis.

Don't think we got this guy to take shots or really score much.. he's a tough physical presence that can play up the lineup and maybe tip or deflect one in here and there.

I think he's been pretty good so far, that whole line needs more production and he's the last to blame for that.

Plus, he's first on the team in hits so far (6).. with double the next forward (Kampf at 3).. he's doing what we got him for and should hopefully get better as everything settles in

we have quite a few players unfortunately competing for the slowest Leaf

Tavares
Simmonds
Ritchie
Muzzin
Sandin
Holl
Bunting

What? According to who?
according to posters on this board , a quick search and you'll see plenty of people saying Boston didn't qualify him because they were afraid of the arb award and not because of his mediocre play

The biggest thing that sticks out for me in regards to Ritchie is how big and slow he is. I really don't understand how a professional athlete can be as out of shape as he looks. 6'3 236lbs. Engvall us 6'5 215. Matthews is 6'3 205. Ritchie would benefit a lot by dropping 15lbs.

It's only been two games, the team has been horrible to be fair. they look like a team afraid to make a mistake vs a team hungry to compete. Aside from Nylander and Campbell, everyone deserves to be dogpiled for the way they have played the first two games. Bunting is a beauty though, he's played 2 games as a Leaf and already he has the other team swarming him. They hate him the same way Leaf fans hate Marchand
