Bob Nicholson, the longtime president and CEO of Hockey Canada is stepping down effective June 1.

Nicholson informed his staff and the Hockey Canada board of his decision today after several days of contemplating his future.

With long-term sponsorship and television agreements in place and Hockey Canada believed to be both structurally and financially strong, the timing of Nicholson's decision, following Olympic Gold in mens and womens hockey in Sochi, makes sense.

Nicholson is expected to maintain his position as vice president of the IIHF and his departure from Hockey Canada will also likely spark speculation of potential NHL interest.

It's believed Hockey Canada will conduct a search as part of the process to replace Nicholson, however, Hockey Canada C.O.O, Scott Smith is considered the frontrunner for the job.

A lot of people, especially Mr. Writer, will be happy. I, for one, liked Mr. Nicholson and thought he did a wonderful job.

This has been a long time coming, imo. Yeah, we won the last Olympics, but that's the only tournament of significance that we've won in the last 5 years. Change has been needed.

This is great for Hockey Canada. Maybe this means that there won't be as much politics in choosing the U20 roster!

That's fair. I think a change needed to be made.

A change was needed, we've faltered big time in the WJ's for the last 5 years. We've been even worse in the World Championships lately. Yes we've won the last 2 Olympics in both men and women but this is a much wanted/needed change. He's been in charge for years, things were getting stale IMO. A fresh approach will do well.

The thing that worried me lately is the way the Junior team was assembled. A lot of politics were involved. Seemed they just went with the top prospects and bunched them together as a team. I will never understand how Connor Brown never made that team. Just unbelievable that the top CHL scorer didn't make the team. I don't care if they thought he was too small, or whatever excuse they have, to leave out the CHL leading point guy off the team is just unbelievably ignorant. They just bypassed him completely.

What? I can't hear you over all the champagne bottles being uncorked. But the bad news is if he elevates one of his flunkies into the position (Salmond) we're doomed for sure.

I wish him well, overall we have done quite nicely under his reign.

I believe he loves Hockey and especially loves Canadian Hockey and bled the Maple Leaf, I respect that.

Think he deserves a pat on the pack as he goes on to new things.

Always the optimist. :)

I agree. I'm totally neutral about Nicholson, more rather think he did a good job. A change can be sometimes also a good thing. We will see.

I think he did a decent enough job but he's 61 this year so his time to leave had come. Be interesting to see where Hockey Canada goes from here.

Nicholson at one point is someone I thought was good for Canada. But the recent World Junior showings and some of the bizarre and obviously political decisions in picking the team were showing their colours. And that isn't good. Brent Sutter seemed to touch on it the most after Canada lost recently. He mentioned how he didn't have full reign over the team, or the selection of the team, and for a guy like that to mention that is telling. Like politicians, you have to change it up before it gets too.................errr..........political.

Well this is mostly good news for Hockey Canada. As others have said, the main issue is the way that certain people retained power and influence within HC, regardless of results. Canada attained pretty good results under Nicholson, but given various advantages it isn't really a result of him in any way. I hope that whoever replaces Nicholson does a good job of promoting hockey to minorities.

Oh good... The Blue Jays start tonight and all of PTS will be about that. :(

I guess there will be no round table talk of the changes at HC. God help me but baseball (and basketball) bore me.

escalating costs I see as the most crucial issue...and minor hockey that is becoming just a little too structured imo.

And also stop doing the CHL's bidding in competing for players who wish to take the NCAA route.

I do hope HC hires his replacement from outside the org. If they promote internally, then it will be more of the same.

Escalating costs is a big factor. HC fighting against that would be a huge step.

I would be shocked if his replacement comes from outside of the current establishment. Coming after a period which is widely perceived as successful, they are not going to hire an outsider.

perceived by whom, the bureaucrats collecting the hefty HC paychecks? And by what measure? Gold medals? The truth is, in Nicholson 16 year tenure, only 8 years, one particular stretch of time, years 2002-10 I would judge to have been successful.
before that and after that....not so much. He's lucky that Sochi saved his bacon sort of speak..he'd be judged a lot more harshly had we not come out of there with the gold medal.

To me, his biggest failing of the last 10 years was not recognizing the slide of goaltending when it was apparent to so many long before it finally dawned on him. He should have been proactive on that long before he finally saw the light. For far too long he was a like a guy who wakes up to find his house destroyed by a a cyclone and says "nothing wrong here mabel, ain't life grand?"

Guy made Hockey Canada what it is today. Your math is not very good, Vancouver was in 2010, I may be wrong but think Canada won that tourney too, men and women . He hired Gretzky and Yzerman . Under his term this country has won 44 GOLD medals. :shakehead:shakehead:shakehead
