Big fingers small screen. Go have a read now.

I figured that is what was happening.

I suspect trading in the OHL is never as straight forward as it is in professional leagues. Its easy to say something was not worth it but you never know if the player is wanting out. For any number of reasons.

With Wray today that kind of reason is obvious. His Dad is up there.

Except now when you look at the Sobolev trade you have to ask if he was only worth Cheynowski and a 7th place pick or if the IceDogs lost ground again?
Regardless they got 2 young guys drafted in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. Honestly Cheynowski looks like a Jr. B player. But they gambled on 2 young guys. Still was worth the shot for half a year of sobolev. If they traded sobolev for 2 picks and those picks didn’t work out if doesn’t make the trade bad.

So Niagara gave up an NHL drafted player for two Jr. B level players on a "gamble" and now released one for a 7th. Just curious what would make any trade "bad" in your mind? Would you at least agree that the math makes it look "not ideal"?

So the player wants to land there and the head coach wants him, yet our GM can only crank out a seventh? Say what you will but an experienced GM would have healthy scratched Wray for a few games until the return came up.

The IceDogs got a half season of Sobelev, roughly one season of Wray, maybe 25.-3.5 of Cheynowski, & 7th pick in exchange for 4, 8 picks.

Not having a proper GM is why we often overpay on our trades or don’t get enough value for our trades. These bad trades will really come back to haunt the IceDogs in the future.
Honestly even next year. Imagine if we managed our picks like a normal rebuilding team? We would have the assets to bring in a few impact players to what should already be a deep team.

Sobolev was an unsigned 5th round pick who never even played a game in the AHL. So yes Wray and honestly Cheynowski were pickups at the time I think most fans were happy with given where they were drafted. Both had/have potential. But they have both not turned out to live up to that potential. They still got value for sobolev at the time.

That's exactly the source of my frustration. Yes, the team is winning hockey games and it is easy to get lost in that momentum. Except next year, we should be in a position to "go for it", but Old Mother Hubbard will find the (draft pick) cupboard bare and the Dogs will get boned.

It isn't impossible to go for it next year. But they'd have to capitalize on both import slots, as well as crush their one big trade. It would have to be a deadline deal next year involving whoever we take in the first round as the main piece.

It won’t take much for Niagara to be a contending team for next season. Except the goalie and perhaps an extra large shut down D, everything is pretty much in place.
It’s possible that the central will be loaded though.

What are you hearing?!
Rumours about Luchanko involving Wassilyn

but that would be a HORRIBLE move as Wassilyn is first in rookie scoring and can play for potentially another 3 after this year (and is bound for a breakout next year as all second year players seem to do)

With Luchanko it is very risky as he could potentially make Philly next year. If he doesn’t though and with it being the go for it all year- Niagara could make a lot of noise next year

That would seem like a silly idea for them but it fits their pattern unfortunately…
