After watching NFL redzone these past few weeks I was thinking about how the NHL could incorporate a similar service for their games. I feel like with the new player tracking system, they could have a sort of app where you choose a list of your favorite players or the players you want to watch for that given game day and the app would notify you when they are on the ice. You then would be able to choose to switch feed to that specific game instantly.

They could also expand that to team specific power plays that are on the ice, last minute of 1 goal games, etc. They could also add some type of goal notification feature where you could go to that feed right after a goal and it would start at the time the puck crossed into the offensive zone or a bit before in the case of a goal off the rush.

It would be a lot to ask from the NHL, but with the advancement of tech nowadays, I'm pretty sure it would be doable. It would be good for fans when your favorite team isn't playing, good for stat watchers and fantasy league players, scouting, also good for just casual fans that want to watch the best players instantly instead of 30 to 45 seconds every few minutes.

What do y'all think?

The problem is NFL games are scheduled to be on at the same time. Bunch of games 1:00 or 4:00 on Sundays, always. NHL games aren’t scheduled like that, lots more staggers in the times and all the teams don’t play on the same day.

If you have NHL Network, they usually have NHL Tonight in during peak hours of games where they analyze and plays and show highlights in almost real time of the games that are on that day.

Also fantasy hockey is infinitesimally less popular than fantasy football in North America

I mean, Redzone jumps around to games in which one team is close to scoring. Closest thing to that would be like, jumping to games where one team goes on the power play.

I cant see it working. NHL scheduling is terrible. I think the games also just way too fast for it to work as well as the NFL.

Have to give the NFL some credit. They got their scheduling down to a science. Their games work damn near perfectly for fantasy football too.

Oh I didn't know NHL network had a show like that. I thought NHL live was like after the games where they showed highlights and stuff.

how about ……grab a beer, sit the f*** down and watch and enjoy the game?
Lol yea that's what I do when I'm watching a Habs game, but let's say they're not playing and like McDavid, Mackinnon, and Pettersson all playing around the same time, wouldn't be fun to be able to watch all or most of their shifts in real time?

NHL network has On the Fly which is their version of Redzone.

Yea, but this version would be more user specific and you would be the one to choose to switch feed when, let's say, you get a notification that McDavid just hopped on the ice.

Lol yeah NFL Redzone is truly a masterpiece, the fact that they can have you glued to the screen for nearly 7 hours is pretty impressive

Why would I do that when I can have four monitors going, live streaming tweets, my headset on, my analytics pages loaded, couple of laptops with spreadsheets pre loaded, and a backup router set up in case the wifi goes down.

I was lucky enough to see Bobby Orr skate in the Garden live as a boy. But even back then, the fans in the crowd were so backwards. They all wanted to take about his skating, his vision, his offensive genius. Boring stuff like that. I wanted to know what his Corsi was compared to a cross tabulation of a similar player's Fenwick ratio. Adjusted against corrections for away game +/- allowances. Plus it was so hard to figure out what was going on without an announcer to tell me who was who and what they were doing. Plus the crowd was cheering for things that had no direct statistical correlations to the outcome -- like big hits. Strange experiences looking back on it!!!!
