NHL.tv replaced by ESPN+, and not available in Australia/NZ

I am in Australia and have had NHL.tv for about 7-8 years. Great product.

Just tried to stream a pre-season game and have discovered they have dropped support for Australia and NZ :(

Other Australian users, have you managed to figure out how to stream games yet? NHL.com suggests ESPN, but they just redirect you to Foxtel/Optus Fetch, or Kayo. I have Kayo, but the experience is not comparable of what was previously available via NHL.tv, and I am unlikely to see games from my preferred team.

Please note - I’m not interested in answers like “use a VPN” or “use a free/illegal” method. I want to know what the replacement is for NHL.TV in my country so that I can subscribe.

Mods - I wasn’t sure where to post this one. Thanks in advance for relocating if necessary.

Thats strange i have espn+ but use fake GPS to use Australia as my location and i can watch games. I only use this because nhltv is better organized then espn app. Perhaps it is working for me because i have espn+.

The way I do it is I use my foxtel go login on the watch Espn site and it adsumidbly is our version of espn+.

That's the correct answer here, they want you to be a foxtel of fetch customer.

In the real world no one uses the espn app here, get a mate with foxtel go to log you in to the espn watch site, it won't affect anything with his foxtel go account. Very similar to how everybody has a mate on an optus phone plan and gets them to log them in to optus sports to watch EPL because most optus customers have access but are not interested in EPL

To OP - I feel for you. I was living in Wellington the past three years and NHL tv was my lifeline. I heard that ESPN+ was going to replace NHL tv this year and I knew immediately it was going to pose a problem.

But fortunately (unfortunately?) I wound up moving back to California for work and my would-be problem was erased.

Good luck sorting it out. I hope you are able to access the games!

Cheers,
Daniel

Poor guys down under. Here in Norway we simply lost all access to any legal online NHL products when Viasat bought all the rights (in order to basically only show Zuccarrello games).

I have not watched a full game in probably seven years. Unless it’s a shoddy illegal stream come playoff time. I just watch highlights in the morning. Won’t share the websites here, but willing to PM.

That’s the NHL for you. A bungling, user-stringent niche-market unable to provide product to consumers willing to pay and too dumb to grow the reach. It’s why I started watching the NBA again.

As a fringe country resident, currently HK and soon to be UAE again. Happy to have not been affected yet. But I feel your pain.

You can't watch NHL.tv through Viaplay in Norway ?

ETA:

Looks like you can. Works exactly the same as in Finland. NHL på Viaplay - Kundeservice

As far as I can tell right now, the ESPN app will only play the games scheduled to be on ESPN or ESPN2. I just got fetch so I could use the app. Very disappointed. No access to ESPN+ unless you want to use a VPN.

Luckily, I've been able to watch preseason games using the NHL app on my ipad, I don't know if this will continue into the regular season. If this continues to work during the regular season, I presume the games on ESPN will be blacked out.

Hope you figure it out (ridgy-didge), we have enough problems just getting the local games with out team. It's almost like the NHL doesn't want people to be able to see their games....

I read in the Athletic today that the NHL with ESPN was going to announce over seas options this week. Hopefully whatever they are doing will work.

Early feedback on the ESPN deal from the overseas fans is not good. They need to do a better job. The league is backsliding a bit.

Cheers mate.

This is what I was afraid of. Just being able to watch scheduled ESPN games is pretty much useless to me. In the past it has basically been 3 games a week from the Metro with a few Dallas and Colorado games thrown in for good measure.

I could watch my team play 82 times live in 2012 for $150/year, but in 2022 I’ll have to pay $60/month with Foxtel to hopefully see my team play twice in 8 months :(

I was able to watch a pre-season game a few days ago via NHL.tv. Just started sending me to ESPN in the last 24 hours.

I guess we just have to suck it up and hope that the ESPN offering improves over time.

ESPN is showing some preseason games on the app, but not as many as nhl.tv. There is a quote somewhere where they say espn will show 1400+ games in Aus so we may get lucky

It's a shame the ESPN deal was only announced two weeks before the season starts, it would've been handy if they'd had a bit longer to work this stuff out.

No way.

NHL.tv was such a good deal in NZ, good price and never any blackouts, and the timezone was great for live games too. I'm a Jets fan too so it's not like ESPN is gonna be of any real value either.

I'm in Europe now so can still use NHL.tv but man, that's gutting news for everyone at home. NHL.tv plus HF Boards are lifelines for us.

Edit: apparently the ESPN app will have ALL games. But would still have to be a Sky subscriber. Yuck.

That's been my understanding too. You can only use the ESPN app which is only accessible through a subscription to something else. ESPN+ is geoblocked and not in Australia.

Do you know if games are only available live? I'd love to pay for this only to get my team on 2 or 3 times a year and then have to take work off to watch it live.

Do you know if you can watch recordings of the game? I haven't seen any news releases pertaining to this in the recent news. If you have and can provide it, please do, thanks.

Re bolded... Same here in Switzerland. As a matter of fact, I have already received an email from the NHL stating that they'll charge my cc $99.99 in October for the upcoming season. I think that they will do it the day before the season starts, so October 11 or 12? I forget.
