That's true, but not every one of Dahlin partner can play 25 minutes if needed, but good luck finding two top 4 D when Adams has only added one lefty in five years.

I would prefer that they keep Power and Dahlin on their current deals and trading Byram as opposed to giving Byram a deal similar to Power and trading Power.
I think Dahlin & Power gets you closer to two quality D pairs than Dahlin & Byram.

Dahlin has gotten decent results with Jokiharju & Samuelsson.
You don't really have to add a true top 4 D for Dahlin to get top pairing results.
It still gets back to finding Power a partner.

That's not entirely true, Dahlin - Jokiharju pairing hasn't had the eye test and Samuelsson just isn't a top 4 D for me with his health. I know Dahlin is great and the rest of our defense is mostly not that good, but we still need good defensemen in the top 4. It's all the same problem of insurance and good depth in case of injuries.

Yeah I've seen it all but they never pass the eye test and the Dahlin - Byram pairing plays way better than the Dahlin - Jokhiharju pairing when I watch the games.
You don't even understand what I said earlier, that you can't just put a bunch of Brysons and Jokiharjus on defense because Dahlin is so great, we've already seen what happened to the team when Dahlin was out with an injury. We need a strong and balanced defense, which we don't even have.

I recognize Power's value offensively and as a puck mover, but I've seen enough of the softness and peewee level defensive acumen. With the way the playoffs are officiated I can't see him as being anything but a train wreck.

They had Byram and Power and everything went to garbage without Dahlin.
So, get rid of both of them and hope that you get lucky and get one or two more Dahlins?
Paying Byram to play with Dahlin doesn't give them bang for the buck because the results of that pairing are not amazing compared to Dahlin with other guys.

My take is Byram is what you see is what you get. Power, many defenseman take 3-4 years to mature. If Power learns how to play defense we could have one of the best defensemen in the league.
Some of Power's offensive stats are top 10 and he is anchoring that 2nd pairing pretty much by himself.
Either way its a tough choice but if it brings us back a 1C a wouldn't be mad.

I saw that too, but who was Byram playing with when Dahlin wasn't there? I seem to remember Bryson and Johnson on the top pairing.
I'd trade Power or Byram or even both, depending on the return. In theory we could keep it as is, but I don't really like this defense.
Okay, don't pay him and trade him then what are we getting back? Your plan to fix our defense?

Byram's second most frequent partner this season has been Power and they were not good together.
Plan A would be offering Byram a 2 or 3 year deal that is max $6M AAV and trade for a decent partner for Power. If Byram wants $8Mx6 or something like that, then I'd trade him and slot in another Dahlin-merchant next to Ras and trade for a decent partner for Power.
It remains about finding a partner for Power because it is easy to find a partner that Dahlin gets quality results with.
Byram hasn't unlocked anything when it comes to Dahlin's play. So, why pay big money for him long term?

He didn't even play defense at Michigan. He exhibited the same shortcomings in hockey IQ. He's exactly the player he was drafted to be. And frankly, it's grown tiresome to watch.

Well of course they weren't good together, I'd be surprised if it were otherwise.
Why do you want a short deal for him? Isn't he a UFA after that? Not sure he'd be okay with that, but I have no problem trading Byram if we can find two top 4 Ds elsewhere.
I agree with that, but I think there are very few options without trade protection and all of them may be questionable for you. Probably Whitecloud and Kesselring are the best options for me.
On the one hand, yes, but on the other hand, it works, so why touch it? Sure, we could find someone cheaper or just a complimentary player like Fabbro, but imagine if we do that and it doesn't work or that player just fails on his own and can handle big minutes. There's a certain risk there, too.
Byram also still showed a more complete game than Power, he is not as soft and is more versatile. He also has good playoff experience. I have no problem trading Power, especially if his price is high.

Its a good thing Adams also recognizes this and brings in a veteran defensive partner to help Power with that...insert sarcasm.

I'm not trading any of our better defensemen or high potential guys unless an upgrade is coming back. Trading from the top of the D stack, in particular, is a good way to stay bad for a long time.
I'm all about adding at this point. Add another good D who is right handed and can play defense. Takes pressure off of everyone else and can be an example that helps others improve their games.
Same at F, btw. I'm not subtracting guys without upgrades. We should be trying to keep Zucker and Greenway, if possible, with Greenway the bigger priority because he is less likely to be upgraded in the role he plays. Bring them both back, but add another good vet F to the mix, preferably at C.
Hockey trades are fine for a change of scenery or to change your roster balance or chemistry, but they aren't going to substantially raise the talent level. To raise the talent level, we should be adding more talent to what we have.
Guys like Joki, Bryson, Gilbert, Clifton. These are the guys you can move on from because they are fully developed and not great in their roles.
I know what I'm saying is not a new idea, but I still think the obvious answer is the best one and many of you are over thinking things.

Byram has the "it" factor. The guy that will go to war with you in playoffs.. do what needs to be done..whether blocking a shot or sticking a cross check in a dudes back.. add in his transition ability, skating and ability to create and I am taking him over Power every day of the week.
I don't think you are going to have to pay him more than 7ish mill a year.
Power will always have his offensive ability but he will always be a defensive train wreck with no battle in him whatsoever.

The Four Nations put this quality on display. We know it's crucial to playoff success too. And we know Power doesn't have it.

No one feels like Power’s issue is more on coaching? More specifically the lack of accountability. I know he’s soft but you can be soft and be disciplined enough to tie up your guy in the front of the net

I think Ruff has been talking about this for a long time and that he told Power to be better in front of the net and to train it, but it doesn't seem to be working.

I think some people just don't have the drive to be dominant professional athletes. Josh Rosen seems like a prime example - he had all the on-field talent, but he was fairly open that he didn't really view an NFL career as his end-all-be-all dream. Of course, he ended up flaming out.
Obviously this is purely from what we can see from the outside, but Power strikes me as a guy who lacks the fire within.
