I was looking at the schedule of the 1938-39 Boston Bruins (they have the 13th-best point percentage of all time and then won the Stanley Cup).
From game 9 to game 15 of that season (Dec. 4th to Dec. 20th, 1938), the Bruins won seven in a row like this:
5 - 0 (vs. Chicago)
2 - 0 (vs. Chicago)
3 - 0 (vs. NY Rangers)
3 - 2 (vs. Montreal)
1 - 0 (vs. Montreal)
2 - 0 (vs. Detroit)
3 - 0 (vs. NY Americans)
In other words, they won seven in a row (four of these on the road, no less) by a combined score of 19 to 2. So, two goals against in seven games. Has any club ever allowed fewer goals against over a seven-game span?
That same club also allowed (if we extend that same period a bit) 3 goals-against in eight games, 5 goals against in nine games, and 7 goals against in ten. Has any club done better?
Post-expansion, maybe this is harder?
Taking a look at the legendary 1976-77 Montreal Canadiens, also 1st overall and also Cup champs, of course -- from game 70 to game 77 that season (March 10th to March 27th, 1977), the Canadiens won eight in a row like this:
7 - 1 (vs. Colorado)
5 - 1 (vs. Chicago)
3 - 0 (vs. L.A.)
5 - 2 (vs. Minnesota)
5 - 1 (vs. Boston)
6 - 1 (vs. St. Louis)
4 - 0 (vs. Detroit)
6 - 0 (vs. Detroit)
In other words, they won eight in a row (four of these on the road, no less) by a combined score of 41 to 6. So, six goals against in eight games. Has any club ever allowed fewer goals against over an eight-game span? (I suspect there are several.)
Anyone know any clubs that did relatively better in such short spans of games?
