I can’t believe the Caps actually ran with Samsonov and Vanecek for a few seasons while they were cup contenders. What a waste.

They were forced to. We did have Henrik Lundqvist on payroll until he had to retire because of a heart issue.

He would have made a big difference.
Lundqvist was bought out by the Rangers because his game had declined dramatically. He was a cheap option with vast experience.

It probably would have gone like all the other old legends in their last years. I’m thinking of Kovalchuk here, Thornton in Toronto, Perry for the last 5 years, Quick is doing okay in New York as a backup, etc.

I’m not saying it was a bad signing, but it was a long shot that he was gonna be a good starter. Big name players past their prime is fools gold, if you expect a lot.

Well count me in for a no vote on the trade with canucks. Team is clicking with what seems like good chemistry and we have some flexible pieces. It seems to be working, and I’m a bird in the hand type of guy. If lappy can really get going we will be very dangerous.

I’m also excited that this is giving Ovie time to heal and there isn’t a huge drop in play that would push an early return.

He wasn't supposed to be the starter. I didn't expect a lot from Hank except a solid vet back-up with an astounding resume. His mentorship and experience would of helped the 2 inexperienced unproven goalies.

Lundqvist's game 'dramatically declining' to .905 SV % in his last season with the Rags? haha Also, attaching a stigma to him because he was 'bought out by the Rangers' holds zero weight. That org f'n sucks at talent management. Look at what they've done in the past 5 years and the scandal going on the past 2 weeks. They're a joke.

ps Quick just doing 'ok' this season with a .936 SV %. (only 7 games played but 'ok'?) Uhhhhhh, no.

You’re quickly moving the goalposts. We were talking about competing for cups.

Maybe his mentorship would have helped Sammy, and Vanacek would have been in Hershey. But Sammy and Vanacek have been bouncing around for a few years now. It may just be an ability issue, not everyone can be starter.

I’d say the one the Rangers have proven to do well is find elite goalies. And given Lundqvist retired the very next season indicates something was there.

Yes Quick is a great backup. Great backups aren’t the team saviours like the Hall of Famer Quick we saw in LA. It’s all relative I guess. Quicks best days are behind him is the point.

I’ll say it again. Caps wasted cup contending years on Sammy and Vanacek. Your idea that Lundqvist is a goalie whisperer who could have saved the Caps seasons is extremely optimistic.

I get the idea of not spending cap space on goalies. We are doing it again this season but we went with Vets and not goalies on their rookie contract learning the NHL.

I ain't moving shit. I didn't say 'saved' Caps seasons. Did I? No. I said he would of made a big difference. As in, improved our goal tending over what we got from SS and VV.

Your initial statement:
"I can’t believe the Caps actually ran with Samsonov and Vanecek for a few seasons while they were cup contenders. What a waste."

You imply the Caps chose this course of action. The Caps Organization didn't have a choice.

Perhaps. Goalies are not the same though, as skaters.

Could’ve been a great story. But alas it all doesn’t matter.

Enjoyable day to switch from game to game and just enjoy the sport after a few days of (good) stress! Hope the guys get some good rest and keep the foot on the gas vs SJ.

Yea it could’ve been, it’s a shame we didn’t get to find out. I always loved watching Lundqvist, except when he was going god mode against us.

Just for a laugh...

I was looking at traded draft picks in the 2025 draft. Came across this doozy of a conditional pick in the Monahan "and a first" for future considerations trade.

I may revisit and parse this out later tonight.
