Every year, I create this NHL Playoff Pool "cheat sheet" to help me pick players for my pools. And I make it available to all of you.
It sorts players by expected points, based on how YOU think the playoffs will go! Complete your playoff bracket and then it will show you who to pick, based on their regular season stats.
Think the Winnipeg Jets, the Best of the West, will go all the way against Washington, the Beasts of the East? Then guess what - Kyle Connor is the best choice! But who to pick next - Ovechkin, Scheifele or Strome? When do you pick Kucherov, MacKinnon, McDavid? Think Dallas will go far? Then don't forget Seguin! Based on how YOU think the playoffs will go, this will show you!
Instructions are on the main tab. It also shows notes for known Injuries, and caveats for players with < 40 games played. The zip file 'NHLPlayoffs_PlayerPool.2025.zip' contains the excel spreadsheet. It's pre-filled simply with all the top seeds winning each round. In no way am I suggesting anything by the selections shown in it.
NOTE this is just a simple spreadsheet to help. I make no promises that it's rocket science, or that it's like a genie in a bottle, or anything like that. I have absolutely NO affiliation with any sports or fantasy or gambling site. I'm just a hockey geek like many of you!
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Have fun with it. Hope it helps!

How has the formula performed so far?

I'm not a hockey pool guy (who has the time) but I'm a hardcore spreadsheet nerd and MAN I'm impressed! I almost want to join a pool just so I can use your tool.

Well done!

I agree, this is really impressive - thanks to the OP for sharing!!

I ran the spreadsheet with the current results up to the end of round 2 and spot-checked a few players on teams that are already out - here are the expected vs actual for the top 8 players in your model that were eliminated already...

Marner 17.6 expected vs 13 actual (-4.6)
Eichel 17.1 vs 10 (-7.1)
Connor 16.6 vs 17 (+0.4)
Matthews 16.3 vs 11 (-5.3)
Ovechkin 15.7 vs 6 (-9.7)
Scheifele 14.9 vs 11 (-3.9)
Nylander 14.3 vs 15 (+0.7)
Stone 14.2 vs 8 (-6.2)

The model generally seemed to pick the right players (with a couple of exceptions) but was mostly a little high on their point totals. Still, as another (non-hardcore) spreadsheet nerd, I find this very impressive!
